USA Aiding Gemini Recovery Vickers In corporated Division of Sperry Rand Corp, Detroit 32, Michigan, have been awarded a contract by North American Aviation to produce pneumatic pitch- and roll-con trol actuation systems for the paragiider recovery system of the Gemini space capsule. Developed by Vickers Aero space Division, the system consists of two identical and interchangeable pneumatic actuation assemblies, one for pitch and the other for roll control. Each assembly consists of a control valve, fixed-angle hydraulic motor modified for pneumatic operation, an integral brake, planetary gear system and a rotating capstan. Pro vision is also made for electrical measure ment of speed and position of each actuator assembly, and for a squib-operated cable cutter on the pitch control. Nitrogen gas is used as the energy source. Vickers equipment, it is stated, will play an important role in the launch as well as the landing of the Gemini. The first two stages of the Titan 2 launch vehicle will carry two Vickers motor pumps. These will be used for ground check-out operations and for control of vernier guidance rockets. Rain-repellent System A new rain-repel lent system for aircraft windscreens, de veloped primarily for the Boeing 727, has been announced by The Boeing Company's Airplane Division. The result of a $lm Boeing research and development pro gramme, initiated in 1961 to evaluate various rain-removal and repellent systems and compounds, the new development makes use of repellent liquid applied in small amounts through nozzles in front of the windscreen. The system is said to improve visibility substantially even with out the use of orthodox rain-removing equipment, though wipers or hot-air blast are recommended for use in conjunction with it. As installed in production 727s, the system consists of two replaceable pres surized repellent containers, tubing con duits and discharge nozzles. It is activated by pressing a button, one application generally providing clear vision throughout the approach and landing sequence. Each container holds enough repellent for some 80 applications. Installations have been in service on Pacific Northern Airlines' 720s between Seattle and Alaska and will be a standard feature of the Boeing 727. Rocket Propellant Research NASA's Office of Advanced Research and Techno logy have signed a §980,488 contract with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Division of United Aircraft Corporation for research involving fluorine-oxygen mixtures and pure fluorine in combination with hydrogen, for use as rocket propellants. This research will be carried out over a 13-month period, using components of the RL-10 hydrogen- oxygen engine modified for use with fluorine, the aim being to demonstrate the feasibility of a complete engine system using the two mixtures. The work is being undertaken in co-operation with NASA's Lewis Research Center and Marshall Space Flight Center. France Telemeasurements Agreement Sud Avia tion, and Data-Control Systems Inc, East Liberty St, Danbury, Conn, recently signed a co-operation contract aimed at "increas ing the possibility and performance of aeronautical and spatial telemeasurements to comply with IRIG standards and for widening the scope of their application in France and Europe."
