230 FLIGHT International, 15 August 1963 Al R COM MERCE... China's Second Viscount arrived at Hong Kong on August 6 on its delivery flight to the Chinese airline. More Alitalia Caravelles Alitalia have ordered two more Caravelle 6Ns to bring their total fleet of this type to 18. They will be delivered in spring 1964. Ansett-ANA and the D.H.126 According to an Australian source, Mr R. M. Ansett of Ansett-ANA has given Hawker de Havilland Australia Pty Ltd a "letter of interest" in the D.H.126 32-passenger DC-3 replacement jet transport for regional services. TWA and the Concorde Mr Charles Tillinghast, president of TWA, says that the airline has been having "exploratory talks" with BAC and Sud on the Concorde. AA and the Concorde According to Mr C. R. Smith, president of American Airlines, the Pan American and Continental orders for Concordes involve the laying down of $125,000 for a delivery position and a $125,000 deposit which is non-returnable if the aircraft meets specification requirements and is not purchased. Caledonian in the Holy Land Caledonian Airways, whose current pilgrim tour programme to the Holy Land has been approved— after El Al objections—by the Israelis, have applied to the ATLB for a March-September 1964 programme calling for approximately 35 flights and some 3,500 passenger seats. Ex-Falcon Viking Auction The Viking formerly owned by Fal con Airways, and which has been at Ndola in Northern Rhodesia ever since it was hi-jacked from the UN at Elizabethville in the Congo nearly two years ago, is to be sold by public auction on September 11 by Iain McHarg Ltd, of First Street, Ndola. Canadian Airline Herald Mergers Eastern Provincial jhas bought Maritime Central Airways, and since both companies operate two Heralds the new Eastern Provincial now has a fleet of four in its own colours. The MCA aircraft had been taken by that company from its associate Nordair, which was not included in the EPA purchase of MCA. The original MCA order for two Heralds is now cancelled. Manchester Airport Agencies, the passenger and freight handling firm at Manchester Airport, have equippped their ground hostesses with 2^lb, £125 Ultra trans mitter! receivers. They have also been issued with mini-bikes (see Straight and Level, page 261) Northeast Lose Florida The CAB has tentatively refused to renew Northeast's New York - Florida licence. BO AC Comet Damaged A BO AC Comet 4 sustained damage to a wing flap when landing at Santa Cruz, Bombay, on August 5. There were no injuries. Fairchild F-27 South American Tour A Fairchild F-27 demonstra tor is due to tour South America "to demonstrate for a number of airline and executive prospects." More TWA 880s Six more Convair 880s have been bought from General Dynamics by TWA, to bring the airline's fleet to 26. It is not stated whether the aircraft are ex-Northeast or those built for Capital. On-Call Customs Facilities, on a trial basis next year, have been promised by HM Customs at Staverton, the airport of Gloucester and Cheltenham. Final authorization is subject to the continuation of the present increased trend of activity. Skyways Luton - Barcelona Skyways Ltd have applied for an inclusive-tour scheduled Constellation service between Luton and Barcelona. The company, taken over by Euravia last year, continues to operate as Skyways. JAL Switch to DC-8s From October 1 JAL's London - Tokyo service will be operated by DC-8s instead of Convair 880Ms; the latter will then be concentrated on Japanese domestic and JAL's South East Asian networks. BUA Redundancy Fears If BOAC and BEA obtain BUA's long- term trooping contracts when these expire next year, says Mr F. A. Laker, managing director of the independent, there will be wide spread redundancy throughout BUA, including at least a further 100 pilots. BUA recently declared 53 of their pilots redundant. RANSA Stratocruiser Conversions RANSA of Miami, who operate scheduled cargo services between Miami, Jamaica, Aruba and Venezuela, have bought five Stratocruisers with an option on five more for modification to all-cargo use. Zero fuel weight is increased to 123,1201b to provide a payload of 43,5001b and all except the first two will have 140in cargo doors. BOAC-Cunard Financial Results Following publication in Flight International for August 1 of BOAC-Cunard's financial results for the nine months ending March 31,1963, BOAC say that final audited cost figures were less than budgeted, and therefore the loss was "appreciably " less than the £1.6m stated in the figures given to the CAB. A BOAC/Qantas/Air-India Conference will take place in New Delhi in October to decide the future plans of the tripartite Com monwealth pool, following preliminary talks held recently in Sydney. The three partners' policy on substantial fare reductions; to be raised at the forthcoming Salzburg IATA traffic conference, is believed to have been considered. Sir Basil Smallpeice represented BOAC. Boom in Swedish Charter Flying Four weeks' holiday a year by law, and the highest wage rates in Europe, have no doubt contri buted to the 300 per cent rise in Swedish charter flying since 1958. The company responsible for most of this growth is Transait Sweden. Two-thirds of Transair's capital was recently sold by the Nyman och Schultz travel agency group to companies belonging to the Johnson and Wallenberg groups. On the buying side of the deal was Mr Curt Nicolin. Tyne-Tees To Be Heard The Minister of Aviation has appointed Sir Ralph Hone to hear the appeal by Tyne-Tees Airways against the decision of the Air Transport Licensing Board to refuse then application for an E licence. The hearing will be on August 22, 1963. In giving their reasons for the refusal, the Board said:"tne^ are not satisfied that the applicant is competent, and fit and propf to operate aircraft for the purpose for which he is seeking this licence."
