FLIGHT International, 15 August 1963 237 Left to right, Lockheed entrants Eva Kaprasova, Czechoslovakia; Hansruedi Ruesch, Switzerland (note manoeuvres card on panel); and Mile Reine Lacour, France chief executive; Air Vice-Marshal G. Silyn Roberts, chief judge; and Col R. L. Preston and Mr E. S. Greenwood, race stewards. Third of the stewards is Councillor J. H. Thompson, who is chairman of the City Council's air pageant organizing committee. This committee decides the main lines of policy along which the meeting will be run, after which most of the detailed organization is looked after by Mr Slade, the organizing secretary. With only one exception, Coventry's air race meetings have been run at a loss. Normally the expenditure amounts to £4,500 to £5,000, and in previous years attendances have reached about 15,000. One main reason for holding the meeting over the August Bank Holiday this year was to attract the public on three days. Meanwhile, back in the Baginton tower on Saturday, August 3, it was announced at 4.30 p.m. that all flying was abandoned for the day. Or, as an agency man put it, speaking distinctly into a tele phone in the press tent, "Rain ruined the first day of the three-day air meeting which. . ." Rain almost ruined the second day of the three-day air meeting, too. Sunday was a miserable day of postponements, starting with briefing at 9.30 a.m. at which a 12.15 start to the Air League race was hoped for, continuing through a series of postponed starts to the final cancellation of flying at 5.20 p.m. Incredibly, the public had turned up in spite of the weather, and were rewarded by an ad hoc display of superb flying in ap palling conditions. Neil Williams in the Arrow Active, d'Orgeix in his Stampe, Fejes of Hungary in a Zlin, and quartet of Czechs, also in Zlins. For these it was worth standing out in the rain and getting soaked. This left one day—Monday, August 5—in which to fly off the remaining 14 Lockheed displays and the races for the Air League Trophy, John Morgan Trophy and King's Cup. Lockheed rule 2.14 was in force: "In the event of bad weather preventing the final being held, the eliminating trial may be counted as the final and prizes awarded accordingly." Also on the programme were a number of "pageant" display items. The wise ones booked back into the hotels where they had checked out that morning. This was going to be a long and busy day. The Air League Trophy race began at 11 o'clock, with David Morgan in the red Turbulent first away. Stott's Moth Minor had engine trouble on its take-off run, failing to develop enough power io get off the ground. Those who did get airborne also had their troubles: the haze was still thick around the course and both Donald (Tiger Moth) and Neil Williams (Arrow Active 2) missed turning points and retired from the race. John George in the B61- kow Junior also missed a turning point and was disqualified. From Baginton we could see very little of the progress around the course because of the poor visibility, but each time round the aerodrome pylon it seemed that Morgan was keeping a pretty good lead. And, indeed, he stayed comfortably ahead when the final Very light went up and the aircraft came in across the finish line. Second was Dennis Hartas in the yellow/black Tiger Moth G-AOAA, and third was another Tiger, flown by Bill Innes. As the gaggle buzzed over the aerodrome, Ron Paine flashed through in the speedy Speed Six to take fourth place. Since four pilots had failed to complete the race, all the remaining eleven went forward to the King's Cup. This Zlin Akrobat Special was flown into first place in the Lockheed aerobatic contest by jaromir Hulka AIR LEAGUE TROPHY Race No. 8 21 20 39 31 14 6 42 34 45 48 82 13 77 96 Aircraft Turbulent Tiger Moth Tiger Moth * Taylorcraft Moth Minor * Tiger Moth Condor Hawk Trainer 3 Cessna 172 Airedale Arrow Active * Bolkow juniort Cessna I80D Falco Hawk Speed 6 * Retired.
