294 FLIGHT International, 22 August 196 The green Avro 504K £3404 "sturdily awaiting its next pupil". . . . . . and the Bleriot Type XI Monoplane, one of Richard Shuttleworth's first aircraft acquisitions ^Bw cars on the wall; and you feel it in the hangars where the Avro 504 sturdily awaits its next pupil, the Bristol Fighter can't wait to get at the Huns again, the 1903 de Dietrich racer itches to do 60 at Brooklands once more—for these veterans have all been splendidly restored both without and within. Unfortunately, none of this restoration and maintenance can be done without money, though up till now a marvellous economy has been achieved with Sqn Ldr Jackson's bricks-without-straw engineering skill, and the faithful conscientiousness of a man-and-a-boy staff. But this is a harsh world; C of A work by Warden Aviation and Engineering Co provides some revenue, but the collection cannot live on endow ments from big firms to keep their most cherished products in trim. This summer, Air Cdre Wheeler decided to open the collection to the public at weekends (adults 5s, children 2s 6d) and no one who goes can fail to be impressed by this beautifully kept miniature cavalcade of British aviation in surroundings such as those where it all began—the grass field, the windsock in the corner, perhaps even a whiff of castor oil trailing back over the hedge. A sight for sore 1914-18 eyes, to bring back old RFC days; or even for the bright glances of young 1963, as a change from 707s and VClOs and Lightnings. CONCORDE POWERPLANT UNDER SCRUTINY Members of the Supersonic Transport Aircraft Committee recently visited the main works of Bristol Siddeley Engines Ltd at Patchway. This is the centre for design and development of the Bristol Siddeley I SNECMA Olympus S93J3, the powerplant of the Concorde. Walking through a production shop are (from left): Mr M. B. Morgan, Controller of Aircraft, MoA; Mr G. L. Hack, Bristol Siddeley deputy production director; and M Robert Vergnaud, Directeur des Transports Aeriens, Secretariat General a VAviation Civile
