482 FLIGHT International, 12 September 1%3 SERVICE AVIATION Air Force, Naval and Army Flying News Royal ADC AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR WALTER CHESHIRE, KCB, CDE, BA, Air Council Member for Personnel, has been appointed Air Aide-de- Camp to the Queen from August 29. Prior to taking up his Air Council post in December 1961 Air Marshal Cheshire was AOC Malta and Deputy Commander-in- Chief (Air), Allied Forces Mediterranean. Air Marshal Slemon Honoured THE MCCURDY MEDAL, presented in conjunc tion with the Canadian International Air Show at Toronto, was awarded recently to Air Marshal C. Roy Slemon, Deputy C-in- C of NORAD, in recognition of his dis tinguished service to aviation over a period of 40 years. Air Marshal Slemon is a former Chief of Air Staff, RCAF, and during the Second World War organized the all- Canadian No 6 Bomber Group. Middle East SASO GP CAPT M. H. LE BAS, DSO, AFC, is to be Senior Air Staff Officer at Air Forces Middle East, Aden, from December 9 with the acting rank of air commodore. Born and educated in the Argentine, he joined the RAFVR in September 1940 and during the war flew Spitfires, commanding 241 Sqn in Italy in 1944 and being awarded the DSO in November that year. He has been Group Captain in charge of Plans at Bomber Command HQ since 1961. Mt Kilimanjaro Rescue A HELICOPTER RESCUE at 15,300ft on Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya was carried out in an Alouette on Wednesday of last week by Maj Stuart Whitehead, who commands No 8 Independent Recce Flight. He said after wards that the altitude achieved might constitute a record for an Alouette. This sketch-map shows the 15 RAF stations "at home" to the public on Battle of Britain Day next Saturday, September 14 The Army was called in to help after a 16- year-old girl, Ruth Joseph, had been taken ill while on a climbing expedition. Maj Whitehead took off from Wilson Airport, Nairobi, at 2 a.m. for Loitokitok Outward Bound School. He was delayed by fog five miles short of his rendezvous with a moun tain guide who had been leading the party of six schoolgirls; but at dawn (0530hr) he landed at Loitokitok, picked up the guide and flew on to Kibo hut at 15,300ft where the girl was. Apart from stripping the heli copter of all surplus equipment he had had to reduce fuel to the minimum, and returned to the Outward Bound School for more before he could pick up his passenger. After she had been flown back to Nairobi to hospital she was reported to be out of danger. RAAF helicopter crews of No 9 squadron who took part in the rescue of 93 people in Queensland floods earlier this year. Seen at RAAF Fairbairn, Canberra, are Sgt G. Buttress, Fit Lts K. Taylor and R. Hentshke September 14 Aerobatics ELEVEN RAF FORMATION AEROBATIC TEAMS are to give 27 displays at airfields "at home"' to the public next Saturday, September 14 (see accompanying sketch-map) to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The leading Fighter Command team, "The Firebirds," flying Lightnings, are giving three shows—at Biggin Hill, Wyton and Gaydon. The Central Flying School team, "The Red Pelicans," are flying at Biggin Hill and Ternhill, following their appearance today (see "In Brief" item on page 483) at Jersey. The Hunter team of 229 OCU are going from Chivenor to perform at St Athan, Colerne and Aldergrove. A four- instructor, four-Meteor team from the College of Air Warfare, Manby, Lines, is performing at Acklington, Finningley, Middleton St George and Waddington; and four schools' in Flying Training Com mand are putting up three-Jet Provost teams: No 1 FTS, Linton-on-Ouse, Yorks. are flying at St Athan and Colerne; No 2 FTS, Syerston, Notts, at Coltishall and Wyton; No 3 FTS, from Leeming, Yorks, at Aldergrove and Finningley; and No 6 FTS, from Acklington, are performing there, Middleton St George and Leuchars. The Royal Navy are putting up a five- Hunter team of 738 Sqn from Lossiemouth to display at Acklington and Leuchars, and teams from NATO air forces contributing are "Les Diables Rouges" (four Hunters of the Royal Belgian Air Force) at Abingdon and Gaydon, and five T-33s of the Royal Netherlands Air Force at Finningley, Waddington and Coltishall. Four F-86 Sabres of the Royal Norwegian Air Force will be formation-flying at Leuehars. Training AAC Mechanics THE TRADE OF AIRCRAFT TECHNICIAN, which is one of the most popular in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, is being extended this month to young REME apprentices, about 20 boys in the September intake at the Army Apprentices School, Arborfield, Berks, having been earmarked for training in it. The boys, all aged 15 or 16, will attend a three-year course of instruction at the school which includes basic military training and tech nical instruction servicing of AAC aircraft. The War Office state that "to keep the machines of the Army Air Corps in the air, the REME maintains worldwide over 600 specially trained mechanics. They are trained in three separate categories in the maintenance of airframes and aero-engines; aircraft instruments; and radio equipment. It is hoped that each of the three future annual intakes at the REME Army Appren tices School will include 24 boys for this specialist training."
