At the end of two years on such a course, graduates return to the aircraft industry, usually to the company where they received their basic training. So far, 69 SBAC scholarship holders have taken courses at the College of Aeronautics and 21 at Imperial College. Over the past 17 years, the value of the scholarships has been progressively increased from £250 to £500 p.a. Sir Herbert Spreckley We record with regret that Air Marshal Sir Herbert D. Spreckley, KBE, CB, FRACS, MiMechE, military adviser to Smiths Aviation Division, died recently at the age of 58. He joined Smiths in October last year, after a long and distinguished Service career, which began with apprenticeship as an aero-engine fitter at Halton and ended as Air Officer Com manding No 24 Group, Technical Training Command. Previously (1954-57) he had been Director-General of Technical Services at the Air Ministry. Sir Herbert was a member of the Council of the Royal Aero nautical Society and also a Fellow of the Society. Ferranti's Widgeon The aircraft equip ment department of Ferranti Ltd at Brack nell, Berks, have recently acquired a Westland Widgeon helicopter for use in the development of Ferranti flight-instrument systems and for communications flying. Based at White Waltham, it has been re furnished and, in the words of the company, "is being turned into an all - weather helicopter, within the limitations of this single-engined aircraft." The aircraft is flown by Maj R. Smith, ARAes, AAC, AER, formerly deputy chief test pilot of Westland Aircraft Ltd, Bristol Helicopter Division, who has been appointed chief helicopter test pilot of Ferranti Ltd. Maj Smith joined Bristol Aircraft Ltd as a test pilot in 1956 and Westland Aircraft in 1960 when the latter took over the Bristol helicopter interests. Technical Publicity Mr A. W. B. Hester, a p.r. consultant, who was included in our recent Ancillary Industry 1963 Directory (August 29 issue), has changed his address to 92 Kingsway, Chandlers Ford, Hamp shire (Chandlers Ford 4366). Mr Armstrong's Award Mr A. J. A. Armstrong, who has been Apprentice Supervisor at RAE Farnborough for the past 18 years, has been awarded the silver turnbuckle of the Society of Licensed Aircraft Engineers, of which he is an associate member. The award, the oldest and most important made by SLAE, has been given to Mr Armstrong in recognition of "distinguished services to aircraft engin eering training." He has been at the Royal Aircraft Establishment more than 50 years. Maj R. Smith, chief heli copter test pilot of Fer ranti Ltd USA COMPANY NEWS Ampex USAF Contract Nearly £lm worth of a new Ampex 14-track high-per formance telemetry recorder has been ordered to equip the USAF Atlantic Missile Range. This has been announced by Mr V. G. Sampson, instrumentation products manager for Ampex Great Britain Ltd, Reading. The recording equipment, consisting of 14-track, 1.5Mc/s pre-detec- tion recorders, will be incorporated in new AMR predetection receiving and data recording systems. These systems are part of a long-term modernization programme for USAF missile range instrumentation. A new FR-1400 recorder, the most advanced available for aerospace telemetry application, is being demonstrated by Ampex at the International Telemetry Conference in London (September 23-27). Motorola London Office Motorola Semi conductor Products Inc, 5005 East Mc Dowell Road, Phoenix 8, Arizona, have opened their first international sales office, at New Bond Street House, 1-5 New Bond Street, London Wl (Hyde Park 3416; cables, Motsem, London Wl; telex, 23639 Usilon, London). The director of Semi conductor International Operations for Motorola, Mr Arthur E. Mahak, has stated that this opening forms part of a large marketing expansion programme planned by the company in international markets over the next few years, with efforts con centrated in three principal areas: the European Common Market; the UK and British Commonwealth; and Japan and the Far East. Manager of the London office is Mr Robert A. DiMassimo, who joined Motorola in 1961. Saturn Programme Contract It is an nounced that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Marshall Space Flight Center at Huntsville, Ala, has awarded the American Machine & Foundry Company's Advanced Products Group a $112,600 contract for manufacturing a hydraulic supply unit for the Saturn pro gramme. The unit will be used by NASA for thrust vector actuation system tests on Saturn boosters. It is capable of producing 3,0001b/sq in hydraulic pressure at 370 gal/min or 5,0001b/sq in at lower flow rates.
