Flying is due to begin on December 1 and will last for two months. CL-44s for Japan Japan Cargo Airways has signed a pur chase agreement with Canadair for three CL-44 swing-tail freighters. The value of the order is about $17m including spares and ground handling equipment. All three aircraft will be delivered in 1964 for service over the Pacific between Japan and the United States west coast. The newly formed Japan Cargo Airways, to be known as JACO, is Japan's first all-cargo carrier. Mr Shinichi Hayakawa, the president, is one of the country's most experienced transport authorities, and was for the past ten years chairman of Nippon Express, Japan's major freight forwarder and con- solidator. University Squadron for Wales Formation of a university air squadron for Wales was announced by the Air Ministry last week. Known as the Univers ity of Wales Air Squadron, it will be based at RAF St Athan, near Cardiff, and equipped with Chipmunk T.lOs. Closed-circuit Record Claim The USSR has claimed a new world distance record for a closed-circuit heli copter flight made on September 18 by Tatiana Russiyan of the Chkatov Central Air Club. She took off from Tushino Airport in an Mi-1, flew over Sukhinichi and Smolensk and returned to Tushino, covering a distance of 814km (over 505 st miles) to break her own world record of 503.3km (312 st miles) established in 1960. All-weather Symposium The United States Federal Aviation Agency held a three-day symposium on all-weather landing systems at Atlantic City between September 16 and 18. Conducted by the Agency's Systems Research and Development Service, the programme included a considerable number of papers, among which a good proportion were given by Smiths, Elliott Brothers and RAE representatives.
