GREENWAY, OBE, CD, has been appointed AOC Training Command, RCAF, with simultaneous promotion to the acting rank of air vice-marshal. He was formerly Assistant Chief of Staff, Plans and Policies, at Allied Air Forces Central Europe HQ, Fontainebleau. Naval Air Command A CHANGE OF NAME for Home Air Command has been announced by the Admiralty: from last Monday, September 30, it has been re-named Naval Air Command. In consequence, the Flag Officer Air (Home) has become Flag Officer, Naval Air Com mand; and the Flag Officer Flying Training is known as Flag Officer, Naval Flying Training. These appointments are at present held respectively by Vice-Admiral Sir John Hamilton, KBE, CB; and Rear Admiral P. D. Gick, CB, OBE, DSC. The Admiralty have stated that these changes are designed to produce self-explanatory titles; they do not involve any alteration in the Command's tasks, which are "mainly devoted to Fleet Air Arm training and, in particular, to bringing Naval air squad rons to the very exacting standards de manded in operating the Navy's aircraft from strike carriers and commando ships." J. W. Wicks of 543 Sqn, with which he has served since January 1961 and with whose aircraft he has flown to many parts of the world. While he was at Palisadoes, Jamaica, in early March this year with one of the squadron Valiants, whose captain was carrying out normal starting procedure, an electrical fire started in the upper servicing bay, which is close to the fuel tanks and is reached by a hatch and a vertical tunnel above the nosewheel. Ch Tech Wicks warned the captain, then entered the compartment, where he was confronted with dense black smoke, acrid fumes and an area of flames in the vicinity of the starter panel. Though his first attempts to extinguish the flames were unsuccessful, he entered this confined space—housing oxygen cylinders and hyd raulic pipes—three times, eventually sub duing the fire with a C02 extinguisher before losing consciousness. He re-assumed his ordinary duties immediately on re covering.
