FLIGHT International, 24 October 1963 705 INDUSTRY International Flight Systems Products Company News Ferranti's newly opened laboratory at Brack nell, housing the aircraft equipment and digital systems divisions (see first news item) Great Britain Ferranti's New Laboratory Last week Mr Julian Amery, Minister of Aviation, for mally opened the new Ferranti research and development laboratories at Bracknell, Berks. Work there has been building up progressively for almost two years, but the ceremony marked full utilization of the building, with 800 physicists, chemists, mathematicians, engineers and draftsmen working in 100,0004sq ft of office, laboratory, clean room and machine shop space. Ferranti's aircraft equipment division and digital systems division are now based there, developing a new inertial system for a "high- performance military aircraft," producing and developing gyroscopic flight instru ments and electrical equipment, working on two versions of the VTOL/helicopter flight system and developing new digital com puters and data links. The last-named include the digital data link between the BMEWS site at Fylingdales and control centres, and such new computers as Poseidon for HMS Eagle and the new flexible Hermes computer. These develop ments and the installations and techniques required for them, as well as much in the field of microminiaturization of practical circuits, were exhibited after the opening ceremony. Decca Cinemap and Cinelog Decca Navi gator have announced a back-projected coloured map display as an addition to their existing line of Flight Logs and Roller Maps. Called Cinemap, the device holds a cassette of 16ft of 70mm film with frames of photographed topographical map cover- Decco Navigator's Cinemap display, using back-projection of topographical map from reels of 70mm film. Right, the cassette containing 16ft of film ing an area 2,800 x 1,900 n.m. and wound on spools. Spool movement represents east-west displacement and the cassette assembly is moved to represent north-south displacement. The cassette can be inserted or removed in a few minutes and can there fore be kept in the crew-room until immed iately before a flight. Convergency is auto matically allowed for in the computer system. Desired tracks can be drawn and erased without damaging the film; and Cineplot is available to make a record of track made good, for example, during reconnaissance sorties. The 6Jin circular display can be track- or north-oriented, with aircraft position appearing in the centre or near the foot of the screen showing more map ahead of than behind the aircraft. The area displayed is of about 50 miles diameter. Aircraft position is also indicated by veeder counters giving latitude and longitude. Solartron Simulator Orders The RAF Central ATC School at Shawbury is to receive six more specialized direction finding simulators to accompany the ATC simulator already supplied. These units have worked so well that the School has decided to train entirely with the simulator, without using actual aircraft at any stage. The DF simulator order is worth £70,000. Solartron have also received a Royal Navy order for an extensive tactical radar simulator for groups of ships and helicopters operating in a simulated exercise area under the supervision of umpires with their own overall displays and controls. Sixty Series Sale Central African Air ways have ordered Marconi Sixty Series radio for their BAC One-Elevens. Each aircraft will have duplicated communi cations radio, a single VHF nav unit and duplicated ADF. Dual Frequency SARBE Burndept Elec tronics announce that they can supply their flotation-type SARBE rescue beacons with automatically cycled transmission on both VHF and UHF distress frequencies. The beacon can be ejected or dropped into the water and will deploy its aerial and begin transmission automatically, for alternate seconds, on 121.5Mc/s and 243Mc/s.
