U • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Remarks First passive communication satellite; 100ft sphere used for passive communications and air density experiments. Second-stage failure. Air Force Special Weapons Center payload included. Ion, electron, and micrometeoroid measurements. Mercury escape system qualification; premature escape-rocket firing. Upon being fired, a Mercury-Redstone (MR-1) rose one inch, stopped firing, and settled back on the launching pad; was fired again on December 19. The Mercury capsule escape rocket also fired. The capsule was recovered and also reused on December 19. Combined infrared measurements with photography. Wide-angle photographs substandard. Second-stage failure; combined vehicle test and inflatable sphere. Exploded after 70sec. Suborbital, 235-mile flight. Booster oversped; chimpanzee (Ham) in 16min flight. Repeat of December 4,1960, shot. Satellite tracking transmitter did not function, but optical tracking provided atmospheric density data. Suborbital, 1,425-mile flight. Second-stage malfunction prevented third and fourth stage firing. Mercury escape system qualification; premature escape-rocket firing. Booster development test necessitated by MR-2 flight. Magnetometer probe; highly eccentric orbit (145,000- mile apogee). Failure in first stage; abort successful. Gamma-ray experiment. One booster engine fired late; repeat of Mercury escape system test. First US suborbital manned space flight (Shepard). Second-stage failure. Third-stage failure. Vehicle test and micrometeoroid experiment. One camera system failed by end of July. Grissom flight. Various experiments including energetic particles profile. First space test of Ranger instrumentation only partial success, since Agena failed to restart. Re mained in parking orbit. Orientation, communi cations, and electronics worked well for more than 100 orbits. Premature re-entry due to tip-off. Vehicle test and micrometeoroid experiment. One orbit; capsule recovered; tracking network checked. Reached 4,261 miles. Electron density measurement, vehicle test. First stage only. Destroyed after 30sec; USAF-launched. Space test of Ranger instrumentation unsuccessh since Agena failed to restart. Remained in parking orbit. Two orbits. Enos the chimpanzee was recovered. Canister ejection and opening successful, but 135ft sphere ruptured. _ S, successful; P, partial success; U, unsuccessful Continued on page
