FLIGHT International, 14 November 1963 820a Rolls-Royce in Italy The Genoa Aviation Exhibition photograph on this page under lines the current contribution of Rolls- Royce Ltd to Italian aviation. All three types of turbine airliner in ser vice with Alitalia—the Vickers Viscount, Sud-Aviation Caravelle and Douglas DC-8 —are powered by Rolls-Royce engines. By last month Rolls-Royce turbojet and turboprop engines had accumulated a million hours of operating experience in service with Alitalia. In the VTOL and STOL field the Derby company's lift jets have been chosen for the Fiat G 95/4 and G 95/6 VTOL strike air craft and the Fiat G.222 STOL transport designs. In addition, Blue Streak, powered by Rolls-Royce rocket engines, forms the bottom stage of the ELDO launch vehicle which will put an Italian-built satellite into orbit. Mr Spouge's Directorship Mr Eric Spouge, ARAes, chief engineer of Teleflex Products Ltd, has been appointed a director of the company. He joined them in 1949 as chief draughtsman, becoming chief designer in 1952 and chief engineer in 1962; previously he had been with the de Havilland Aircraft Co. At Teleflex, Mr Spouge has played a major part in the development of the company's aircraft control systems, particu larly the widely used cable tension regula tors. Other equipment developed under his guidance includes the inertial reel aircrew harness (usea in British civil and military transports and standard equipment on BEA and BOAC aircraft) and, more recently, a new type pilot's seat with retractable lap belts. 3M Go to Harlow The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co are entering the photographic field "where they see a sub stantial growth potential." A research unit —the first to be set up by the company out side the USA—will be opened at Harlow New Town, Essex, on November 13. Amplivox Research Mr A. E. Cawkell, senMiEE, formerly of Cawkell Research & Electronics Ltd and Dawe Instruments Ltd, has joined Amplivox Ltd as head of research and product development. Gen Remondino, Commander-in-Chief of the Italian Air Force (in uniform), discusses Rolls-Royce engines with Gp Capt S. Wroath (centre), sales project manager, military engines, on the company's stand at the recent Genoa Exhibition. (News item, col I) USA Ryan Demonstrate Do32 An accompany ing photograph shows a Dornier Do32 Cricket light helicopter being flown by Dornier chief test pilot Friedel Wissel in a demonstration organized by Ryan Aero nautical Co near San Diego. The heli copter bears US registration, and on October 25 was demonstrated in Washington DC. It is now engaged in a tour of the USA. T. Claude Ryan and Prof Dr Claudius Dornier together watched a Do32 perform at the Paris Salon in June, and Lou Everett (the Ryan engineering test pilot specializing in Flex Wings) flew the Do32 some weeks earlier and submitted a highly favourable report. As described in our May 16 issue, the little one-man helicopter is powered by a BMW turbocompressor supplying air to cold jets at the tips of the 24ft 7in rotor. The Do32 has been designed to fold into a 12ft 6in box, from which it can be upacked and flown in 5min. Enquiries in Britain may be addressed to The Merchant Princes Co Ltd, of 135 Preston Road, Brighton. Republic to Design C-2A Mid-section A $649,713 contract to design the fuselage mid-section structure of the Grumman C-2A advanced carrier-based cargo aircraft has been awarded to Republic Aviation Corporation, of Farmingdale, NY. The C-2A, dubbed the "COD" or carrier-on board delivery aircraft, is the cargo and personnel-carrying version of the E-2A Hawkeye AEW aeroplane (two Allison T56-A-8 turboprops) scheduled for opera tional status with the US Navy early next year. The contract, according to Republic spokesmen, calls for structural redesign of the Hawkeye's mid-section, replacing the early-warning electronics system with cargo and personnel-carrying capability. As with the Hawkeye the C-2A will be stressed to withstand catapult take-offs and arrested landings. Ling-Temco-Vought V-P The election of Mr Forbes (Ted) Mann, director of Washington operations and foreign sales for Ling-Temco-Vought Inc, to the position of vice-president, government and foreign relations, was announced last week by the company's president Mr Gilford K. Johnson. In addition to his US duties, Mr Mann will direct European marketing operations from offices in Paris and Bonn. LTV, who recently sold Crusaders to the French Navy, have a joint interest with Pye Ltd in Pye-Ling Ltd and with Sud Aviation in Societe Europeenne de Materi- els Mobiles. Litton Vice-Presidency Mr Allen H. Orbuch has been promoted to the newly created position of vice-president, market ing, of the Guidance and Control Systems division of Litton Industries. France Demonstration of a Do32 fight helicopter at the Ryan plant at San Diego, California (see news item above) FH.110 PropeDer Type approval for the FH.110 propeller, designed for piston engines in the power range 94-134 b.h.p., has so far been obtained for the 87 b.h.p. Continental and the 108 b.h.p. Potez type 4E engine. A feature of this two-bladed propeller, manufactured by Societe Anonyme Ratier- Figeac, 16 Rue de la Paix, Paris 2e, is its reduced-size hub, which consists of two die- forged duralumin barrel halves and enables ground setting of the blade angle to be carried out, in order to use available engine output in optimum conditions. A datum mark is engraved on the camber side of each blade, providing for accurate adjustment of angle.
