960 FLIGHT International, 12 December 1963 International Airports CURRENT FACTS AND FIGURES This year's "Flight International" tabulation of the world's airports, beginning below, brings in five which have not been previously included, making the total listed 256. They are Genoa/Sestri, previously known as Christopher Colombus but renamed when it was opened to international traffic early this year; Addis Ababa; Berlin Tegel; Bratislava Ivanka; and Christchurch International, the two last-named having been recently extended. In 1959 it was estimated that the amount of new runway construction or extension required to fit world airports to the big jets could be expressed in terms of an 80ft-wide road running from London to Berwick-on-Tweed, a distance of 346 miles. Continuing this analogy, last year's new construction amounted to 44 miles, a little more than the 1962 total of 39; but well below the peak year of 1961, in which the figure was 83 miles. This imaginary road has now reached just over two-thirds of the distance and, with 236; miles on the clock, has arrived a little>ver ten miles south of Doncaster. New airports, for which firm plans exist or on which work has positively started, include Auckland/Mangere, Melbourne Tuilamarine, Moscow/Domodedovo and Tokio. Conversely, plans have existed for a long time for Baghdad, Damascus and Santiago Pudahuel, but no news has filtered through during the past year. One interesting new arrival in the planning field is for a new central airport to serve Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa. Of existing plans for runway extensions there is little to show that firm undertakings have been translated into concrete. Amsterdam and Bone (Algeria) are notable exceptions: from these two there is solid evidence of work in progress. For the rest we must wait and see, especially in the matter of those which are already 12 months, and more, past their target dates. As in past years, the staff of the Aeronautical Information Service of the Ministry of Aviation have assisted in compiling these tables, and their help is gratefully acknowledged. They have included the latest information available up to December 5.
