AIRPORT EQUIPMENT . Vixen, a 500gal/min unit which can be supplied either as a complete vehicle or as a "package" unit for independent installation. Among other manufacturers of hydrant dispensers are the Wayne Tank & Pump Co Ltd. Fuelling Components Automotive Products Co Ltd produce a range of their PurOlator filters for use in both bulk fuel installations and refuelling vehicles. They also make the TurbOmonitor, a hose- end filter which continuously checks the fuel as it enters the aircraft. Fuel, oil and water hose couplings are among the products of the associated Avery Division. Flight Refuelling Ltd number among their refuelling components a hose-end pressure controller in which the fuel pressure is moni tored against an air-pressure datum, giving particularly fast response to high surge pres sures. Other FR equipment includes com ponents for hydrant systems, and a number of these have been incorporated in the new in stallation at Paris Orly. Equipment by Stream-Line Filters Ltd in cludes the K-type range of bulk filters, rated at between 5 and 300gal/min, capable of re moving solid impurities down to sub-micron size; the smaller M type, for use where 5- micron removal is adequate; two-stage filter/ 972-973 Foden I3,000gal re fueller for Esso; tankage by the Steel Barrel Co Ltd, engine by Rolls-Royce water-separators; a "go-no-go" monitor, designed to shut off a fuel supply if water is present; and hydraulic-fluid filters. "Virtually all refuellers now in use are fitted with our automatic bottom-loading equipment," state Avery-Hardoll Ltd, "thus enabling fast, safe filling to be carried out without fear of spillage." Meters, couplings and complete hydrant pit equipment are this company's principal products. Saunders Valve Co Ltd contribute dia phragm valves for, inter alia, automatically controlling the filtration and dispensing of fuel from storage tanks. Other well-known manufacturers of com ponents are Elliott (Treforest) Ltd, Rellumit (London) Ltd, Tecalemit Ltd, Thompson Bros (Bilston) Ltd, Wayne Tank & Pump Co Ltd and Zwicky Ltd. Instrumentation specialists include Sangamo Weston Ltd. Gloster Equip ment Ltd offer a number of special-purpose couplings. Oxygen, De-frosting Dispensers—Oil, Fluid, etc Lubricating-oil trollies of various types are manufactured by, among others, the Steel Barrel Co Ltd, Thompson Bros (Bilston) Ltd, and Wayne Tank & Pump Co Ltd. British Oxygen Aviation Services, well known as specialists in the supply of oxygen and nitrogen, have developed a wide range of storage and dispensing equipment for these gases in liquid as well as gaseous forms. At present confined mainly to the military field, lox is likely to come into increasing use on civil aircraft and BOAS state that their existing equipment, and/or modifications of it, will be suitable for servicing at international airports. An oxygen-bottle trolley, with valving equipment, is manufactured by Aviation Traders (Engineering) Ltd. Equipment for de-frosting aircraft is sup plied by, among others, Rollason Aeroces- sories Ltd, H. W. Edghill Equipment Ltd, Zwicky Ltd, and Simon Engineering Dudley Ltd, the last-named utilizing their hydraulic- ally elevated platforms (among the users of which are BEA) to give access to high tails. Specialists in de-frosting fluids are Kilfrost Ltd, whose D.C.2A hot-application fluid is widely used by world airlines. During the severe winter of 1962-63 BEA used some 25,000gal of Kilfrost hot fluid at London Air port alone. Advantages of the method are that hot fluid is less likely to be diluted by the FLIGHT International, 12 December 1963 Fuel and Oil Suppliers Air BP (British Petroleum Co Ltd), Britannic House, Finsbury Circus, London EC2 T: National 1200. Toilet-servicing Equipment Though at first sight a matter of simple engineering design, ground servicing equip ment for aircraft toilets does in fact raise a number of special problems. These have been carefully studied by makers of trollies for this purpose, who include H.M.L. (Engineering) Ltd, H. W. Edghill Equipment Ltd and Gloster Equipment Ltd (previously Armstrong-Whit- worth Equipment Ltd). BEA are among the users of the large- capacity powered vehicles designed by Eagle Engineering Co Ltd specifically for toilet servicing. Manufacturers of components in this field include Saunders Valve Co Ltd, with their dia phragm valves; Teddington Aircraft Controls Ltd, with a shut-off valve; and Bell's Asbestos and Engineering Ltd. with a hose in nitrile- proof Terylene fabric with embedded steel Alvis Salamander (above) and A.E.C. Thorny- croft-Pyrene crash/fire tenders SECTION FIVE: EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT Crash/Fire Equipment Design co-operation over a number of years between vehicle chassis manufacturers and firms specializing in fire-fighting equipment has resulted in an extensive range of highly efficient fire/crash tenders being available for airport use. In the majority of cases emphasis is placed on the ability of these vehicles to cross .rough ground as almost as speedily as they traverse smooth airport surfaces. Typical of such equipment is the Alvis Salamander, on a 6 x 6 (six-wheel drive) chassis with an eight-cylinder Rolls-Royce B.81 petrol engine. The Salamander is offered with fire-fighting equipment by either the Pyrene Co Ltd or Foamite Ltd. The Nubian tender by A.E.C. Thornycroft is offered with either a6x6or4x4 chassis and a variety of fire equipment; powerplant is a Rolls-Royce B.81. Other companies offering or equippmij complete vehicles include Fire Armour Ltd (Thornycroft, Bedford and Land-R°ve[ chassis); Leyland Motors; Alf'd Miles Ltd (Land-Rover with Coventry Climax pump). Dennis Bros Ltd, F. L. Douglas (Equipment) Ltd, General Fire Appliance Co Ltd, Mef?' weather & Sons Ltd, Sun Engineering (R«*" mond) Ltd, and R. J.
