FLIGHT International, 19 December 1963 LAUNCH FOUR Out of this picture comes the thunder of big turbojet* with 'burners lit, the salty spray Mowing t«ck across the acre-art), i. half of foredeck and all the ordered hustle that characterizes a big carrier during flying operations. The photograph was taken aboard USS "Ranger" (CVA-61), which has now returned to her home port of Alameda, California, after serving seven months with the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific. When the US Navy photographer clicked his shutter No 1 catapult had just launched a Chance Vought F-8C Crusader, with the latter's Pratt & Whitney J57-16 turbojet at maximum (hot) thrust and a white, writhing vortex streaming back from the tip of its variable-incidence wing. At upper centre is an F-8C launched by No 2 catapult, leaving a smoky trail following 'burner shutdown. Over the bows a third F-8C is departing from No 4 catapult, and a fourth F-8C, from catapult No 3, is almost out of the picture at upper right. In the foreground a McDonnell F-4B Phantom II awaits its turn for the No 4 catapult
