By contrast there is no new aeroplane in Grave of Sand by David Graham (Robert Hale Ltd, 63 Old Brompton Road, London SW7; 12s 6d) but one which is hi-jacked, has its pressurization destroyed bv a shooting incident and has to be forced-landed in the Aden area. There is a Middle Eastern flavour about The Fighter by Richard Hough (Michael Joseph Ltd, 26 Bloomsbury St, London WC1; 16s), though the locale is never precisely identified. This novel poses an extraordinary situation: an ex-RAF fighter-bomber pilot, who has a conscience about his wartime destructive success and blames himself for injuring his wife and children in a car accident, finds himself in a township besieged by a tribe with a big gun. When a shell from it lands on a cross in the town square, the destruction reveals a packing-case containing an aircraft of the type he used to fly. It is assembled, fuelled and armed under his directions; the ex- pilot takes it off, destroys the gun, saves the townspeople and salves his conscience. An improbable story, perhaps; but well written and ready-made for a film director. What seems like an improbable story, but is nevertheless a true one, is told by Anthony Smith in Throw Out Two Hands (George Allen and Unwin Ltd, 40 Museum St, London WC1; illustrated, 30s): how the author and two companions voyaged by balloon from Zanzibar to the Serengeti National Park Area of Tanganyika, a voyage achieved with determination, skill and courage. The story is beautifully told, and admirably illustrated with colour photographs; it makes delightful reading for a winter fireside. Among the most welcome products of the book trade at such a season, when present-giving and indoor reading are in happy concurrence; is the annual or anthology; and aeronautical publi cations of this type show up well this year. There is the Macdonald World Air Power Guide (Macdonald & Co; illustrated, 15s), a comprehensive and authoritative delineation of world air forces and Inertial Guidance Engineering, by Manuel Fernandez and George R. Macomber. Prentice-Hall International, 28 Welbeck Street, London Wl. Price 63s. Aircraft Instrument Control Systems, by C. A. Williams, AFRAes, MSLAE, AMBritiRE. Odhams Press Ltd, Long Acre, London. Glines (D. Van Nostrand Co Ltd, 358 Kensington High St, London W14; illustrated, 30s), emphasizing the worldwide and aerospace role of the USAF. Aerospace activities are the subject of The Boys' Book of Space by Patrick Moore (Burke Publishing Co Ltd, 14 John St, London VVC1; illustrated, 12s 6d), a clear and succinct account for tomorrow's cosmonauts; and for boys who make aircraft models there is the Aero Modeller Annual 1963-64 (Model Aeronautical Press Ltd, 38 Clarendon Rd, Watford, Herts; illustrated, 10s 6d), bringing them up to date on latest types and methods of construction. For an older generation, but still in the world of the annuals, there is Brassey's Annual for 1963 (William Clowes & Sons Ltd, Little New St, London EC4; illustrated, £4 4s), providing an up-to-date picture of Britain's armed forces. Among contributors is W. T. Gunston, technical editor of this journal, who appraises new developments in aircraft and missiles. Such is the variety of current aeronautical books that it looks as though anyone fortunate enough to be "gifted" with one (as the Scots put it) this Christmas will be both informed and entertained..
