fLIGHT International, 19 December 1963 and chief engineer (military engines) in July 958. Joining Rolls-Royce in 1949, Mr Metcalfe worked on the initial development of the part and for eight years was chief perfor mance engineer, civil gas turbines. In 1959 he was made project engineer on the Avon for the Comet 4 and Caravelle and became senior project engineer, Conway, in 1961. Mr Bragg, who joined the company direct from Cambridge in 1944 to work on performance and aerodynamic design of gas turbines, won a Commonwealth Fund Fellowship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1948, where he took his SM degree. Returning to England he worked on heat-resistant materials with William Jessop and Sons and re-joined Rolls-Royce in 1951, to take charge of combustion research. In 1956 he was appointed chief performance engineer, rocket engines. Board Change at Pye Mr E. J. W. Stanley has retired from the board of Pye of Cambridge Ltd and Mr J. O. Stanley has been appointed a director. Model Kits Revell (Great Britain) Ltd, manufacturers of small-scale aircraft and other plastics model kits, have recently moved their production into a new factory Cranborne Road, Potters Bar, Middx. Their offices (at present at Maidstone House, 25-27 Berners Street, LondcfnWl) will be transferred there next spring. Recent additions to the Revell 1/72-scale range of kits include the Mustang P-51D, Hawker Tempest, Kawasaki Hien (Tony), Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk, Messerschmitt Me262 and Chance Vought Corsair F4U- 1D. All are priced at 2s lid each. Also available are Christmas gift aircraft sets, one priced at 19s 8d and containing four jet fighters—Skyrocket, Stiletto (Douglas X-3), Scorpion, Voodoo)—and the other, at 17s M, containing six "famous fighters"— Spitfire Mk II, Mel09, P-47D, Focke-Wulf 190, Hurricane and Zero. The company have recently published a booklet, written by Bruce Robertson and illustrated by B. Knight, entitled Fighters of World War II. It is obtainable in ex change for six box-ends from any of their 2s lid kits, plus a form from a box and 6d to cover handling charges. USA Bioastronautics Chief Dr William M. Helvey has been appointed technical director of the Lockheed bioastronautics organization; he comes from Republic's research division, where he was assistant director. Lockheed bioastronautics was formed ^r'y this year to conduct applied research, dev elopment engineering and analytical ^tuoies in aerospace medicine, life sciences, human factors engineering, life support, "e protection, vehicle sterilization, bio- 'nstrumentation and crew system simu- ation. It is already engaged on man- machine problems inherent in aerospace, ground and undersea systems. Hughes VP Mr Edwin P. Ramsey has been appointed to the new position of vice- president, Far East area, Hughes Aircraft International Service Co. He will continue to serve as manager of the Hughes Far East office in Tokyo and his appointment to the vice-presidency is described as "indica tive of the increase in the importance of the Far East market" and part of the expansion of Hughes overseas operations. Hughes Aircraft International Service Co has responsibility for marketing the military and commercial products of Hughes Air craft Co outside the US. Hydrazine Control Rocket Rocket Re search Corp announce a new monopro- pellant (hydrazine) control rocket with a thrust of 51b. Using a new ambient- temperature spontaneous catalyst, it is designed for multiple starts and pulsed Thrust chamber of the hydrazine control rocket by RRC operation. Delivered steady-state vacuum Isp is 240sec at an area ratio of 100. The thrust chamber (picture) is 6in long and weighs 8oz. Rocket Research Corp, of 233 South Holden Street, Seattle, Washing ton, have developed other chambers with ratings from 8oz to 5001b. France Nord-Aviation in 1962 In their review of calendar year 1962 Nord-Aviation report that total sales (before tax) increased to F395,885,590.40 from some F352m in 1961. The report covers the whole range of the company's diverse activities, but it is especially worth noting what they have to say about their missile activities. Much is expected of the big AS.30, which has been bought as standard equipment for RAF Canberras; negotiations are in hand with Australia, Switzerland and South Africa (Mirage III users) and are now opening with West Germany and other users of the F-104G; "studies concerning the derivatives of this missile have aroused wide interest... they are progressing very actively." 1014a Very large orders are in hand for the SS.ll and Entac anti-tank weapons, and negotiations for licence production of SS.l 1 in the USA have reached an advanced stage; SS.ll production is expected to remain at a high level during the coming years. Nord expect that new studies placed within the framework of co-operation with "a foreign firm" should guarantee its long-term future in the anti-tank missile field. The "foreign firm" is the British Aircraft Corporation. Turbomeca Statistics By the end of October the factories at Bordes, BP, France, of the Societe Turbomeca had delivered 3,500 Marbore II turbojets (the 3,500th was shipped to the Bedek Co in Israel). An additional 3,354 Marbores have been manufactured under licence in the USA (by Continental) and in Spain. Turbomeca further state that by the end of October their engines had logged l,500,000hr operating time, of which l,340,000hr were in flight. Germany German Satellite Station Germany's first transportable satellite ground station, designed and built by the International Telephone and Telegraph Corp (ITT), New York, and installed by ITT's German affiliate Standard Elektrik Lorenz (SEL), Stuttgart, together with engineers of ITT and the German PTT. was commissioned at Raisting, Upper Bavaria, on November 8, by the Federal Minister of the German PTT, Herr Richard Stuecklen. The terminal is capable of working with communication satellites of the Relay and Telstar type, providing 12 two-way voice channels. The equipment can handle fac simile, multichannel teleprinter circuits and high-speed data transmission. The station is completely self-contained. It travels in a van and three trailers, and can be shipped by sea, air, rail or road to any remote destination. Owner of the terminal at Raisting is the German PTT. Two ground stations of the same type are in operation in the United States, and one in Brazil.
