Air-Cushion Vehicles FLIGHT International supplement, 26 September K unit, and inside are upper and lower sets of bevel gears providing drive and speed-reduction to the propellers. These units are so designed that the pod on which the propeller is fitted can be swivelled on the vertical axis to provide manoeuvring power. Reverse gear is fitted for astern power. The following materials are used in glass-fibre fabrications:— 1. Polyester Resin, supplied by British Industrial Plastics Ltd. This is a general laminating cold-curing resin. 2. The gel-coat is basically B.I.P. 4128 and 28T (thixotropic resin). 3. Glass Reinforcement: Fibreglass F.G.E. 2000 (at 2oz/sq ft) and Fibreglass surface tissue are used. 4. Pigment: Supplied by Llewelyn Ryland Ltd, this is used for colouring the resin in the laminates, the outer layers only being so treated. The use of this pigment obviates the necessity for painting. 5. Catalyst: Supplied by Laporte Chem icals Ltd, of Luton. This is methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and is an essential additive to the polyester resin to effect curing. The other curing agent, the accelerator, is a cobalt metal salt in a spirit carrier, and is obtained from British Industrial Plastics Ltd. 6. Mould Techniques: The orthodox cold curing, open lay-up, contact methods are used, generally on wooden female moulds. Wooden moulds are used on prototype only; ultimately, for higher rates of output, glass-fibre moulds would be used. The work is carried out in a temperature-con trolled shop, heating being maintained 24 hours per day at 65-70°F. Due to the sheer physical size of the moulds post-curing is not possible; however, an extended period of fitting out which has been carried out in the same shop ensures adequate curing conditions. 7. Fastenings and Bonding: Mechanical fastenings, generally either sea-water-resist ing aluminium alloy Huckbolts, supplied by Avdel Ltd, or Riv-Nuts (supplied by Linread Ltd) which are screw-type fast ings, applicable where one side of the wc only is accessible. These mechani fastenings are placed by special p0\ operated tools supplied by the mak< and are used in joining up in locations wh are in association with: (a) Polyester/gla fibre bonds; (b) Araldite epoxy gh (supplied by Ciba ARL Ltd); (c) Wa repellent sealing components such Secomastic strip or tape, according to t particular application. The plywood bottom, internally a externally, is protected by polyuretha enamels supplied by International Paii Ltd, and anti-fouling of the bottom achieved by the application of hai raising copper anti-fouling paint, aga supplied by International Paints Ltd.
