208 FLIGHT International, 6 February 1964 1 KEY TO CUTAWAY F-I05DREPUBLIC F-105D . . . This illustration by Arthur Bowbeer, our chief editorial artist, clarifies the salient features of what has been described as "the world's most powerful one-man airplane," subject of the accompanying feature article. The main drawing is based upon an earlier cutaway illustration of the F-I05B which appeared in our issue dated June 12, 1959. Compared with the 8 model the F-I05D differs chiefly in having much-improved mission electronics and instrumentation to permit all kinds of offensive strike and reconnaissance operations in all weathers. Some of the advanced equipment carried may be seen in the inset of the starboard side of the nose. Also shown on the main drawing is a selection of the extensive range of equipment which may be carried externally; and attention is drawn to the separate receptacles above the nose for either flying-boom or drogue refuelling. Despite its tremendous striking power, the F-1 OSD is offered for export at the amazingly low price of $ 1,600,000 (£571,000) 1 Dielectric nosecone: hinges to port 2 Radar antenna 3 NASARR R-I4A radar 4 ADF antenna 5 Forward electronic pack 6 M-61 six-barrel 20mm gun: hyd. op- 7 Gun-port 8 Ammunition drum (beltless feed) | 9 Cases retained 10 Lox converter 11 Lox filling point 12 Flight refuelling socket for flyingboom 13 Flight refuelling probe and drogue . 14 Pitot/static, electrically de-iced i 15 Heated, bullet-resisting windscreen , 14 Air-sandwich sidepanels 17 Air-turbine unit driving AC generator and utility system hydraulic pump 18 Electrically operated canopy 19 Emergency canopy-drive d'seng 8 button
