iJGHT International, 6 February 1964 213 SPORT AND BUSINESS The prototype Slingsby T.SI Dart 15-metre sailplane is now at Lasham undergoing BGA flight testing; several examples should fly in this year's national championships World Championship Gliding was the subject of a panel discussion at the Kronfeld Club, London, on Wednesday of last week, January 29. The members of the panel, all British-team veterans of many world championships, comprised Mrs Ann Welch, team captain; Brigadier Anthony Deane-Drummond, pilot; and Mr Frank Irving, crewman. Chairman and question-filter for the evening was Mr Walter Kahn of Lasham Gliding Centre. During a varied discussion ranging over pilot qualities and selection, sail- plane development, contest organization and other topics, it emerged that the British Gliding Association, as organizers of the next world championships in 1965, are facing a major problem of finance because of an unexpected Treasury decision that the or- ganizers must pay a considerable sum of money for the use of the RAF station at South Cerney on this international occasion. As a result, BGA chairman Philip Wills confirmed, it had been necessary for the Association to charge a fee of £250 per entry (one aircraft and crew). Seaplane Club Progress The flying experience required before pilots are qualified to fly the Seaplane Club's Tiger Moth floatplane has been reduced from 100 to 50hr as first pilot. Pilots holding a current PPL but having less than 50hr in charge may take dual in- struction on the aircraft, but may not fly it solo until they have attained the 50hr figure. The rate for flying the Sea Tiger is £5 per hour, and the club membership subscription is £4 per year. At the club's annual general meeting recently, Lord Douglas of Kirtle- side was re-elected president, Dr Reginald Bennett and Mr Francis Chichester were re-elected vice-presidents, and Mr J. Lankester Parker was re-elected chairman. The 1963-64 committee comprises T. Brooke-Smith, I. Faulconer, J. B. Griffiths, N. H. Jones, Dr M. T. Moore, S. H. Parker and R. Toms, with C. A. Nepean Bishop continuing as secretary and manager. .: Beefed-up Baron Recently announced by Beech Aircraft Cor- poration is a new version of the Baron, known as the B55, having an increased gross weight, lengthened fuselage and an improved performance. A longer nosecone increases the radio and baggage compartment space by 50 per cent, giving 12 cu ft for baggage and 7 cu ft for radio. Using new propellers, the B55 has a better rate of climb than its predecessor and maintains an altitude of 9,100ft on one engine at full gross weight (now increased trom 4,880 to 5,0001b). Cruising speed at 75 per cent power (2,450 r.p.m. at 7.000ft) is 225 m.p.h., and useful load is 2,0051b. University Project A Horten 14 Colonia flying-wing sailplane is being developed and constructed by a group of students and staff at Cologne University and Cologne Institute of Technology. Dr Reimar Horten is a member of the group, known as Flugwissen- schaftliche Vereinigung Koln e.V., and has designed the Colonia as a standard-class machine with a flying weight of 260kg (5751b) and maximum lift/drag ratio of 34 at 82km/hr (51 m.p.h.). First flight of the prototype is scheduled for mid-1964. British Executive Air Services at Oxford Airport are now approved by the Ministry of Aviation to conduct radio-telephony licence examinations, so that students may be both trained and tested in the R/T classroom at Kidlington instead of having to take the examination at an MoA centre. Whelan Beacons Fuselage-mounted and tail-mounted versions of the light-aircraft anti-collision beacons produced by Whelan Engineering Co of Deep River, Connecticut, are now available at £19 16s from Air Rent Ltd, Victory Works, Maitland Road, Stratford, London El5 (Maryland 2004). This Aero C-104 (Czech-built Bucker Jungmann) is powered by a 105 h.p. Walter Mikron and owned by Mira Slowak.
