278 fUGHT International, 20 February 1964 Early last week the Short Belfast com- pleted its first 30 hours of test flying, accumulated in 17 sorties dating from the maiden flight on January 5; then on Tuesday, February 11, it was flown by an ARB pilot, Mr G. L. Howitt, before going into the works for its first inspection and overhaul. These im- pressions of test-crew members deeply engrossed in their duties—incidentally the first interior photographs of the Belfast to be taken in the air—are the work of Mr H. G. Con way, Short Brothers joint managing director, who it a keen amateur photographer. In the left-hand seat; chief test pilot Denis Tayler Right-hand man: Sqd Ldr P. A. Beckley, liaison officer from Trans- port Command FACT-FINDING MISSION So vast is Ms heavy logistic transport's interior—seen here looking forward—that even a full complement of flight-test equipment plus tanks of water ballast fail to diminish the impression of tmptiness. The starboard (static) tank holds l,2S0gal and the port (transfer) tank 800gal; another 800gal transfer tank is visible against the forward bulkhead
