284 FLIGHT International, 20 February /9<M FLIGHT SYSTEMS SURVE ONE MAN AN[ HIS SYSTEM! A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT of ground school and simulator time is necessary before a pilot can fully master a "systemized" tactical aircraft such as the Republic F-105D, the cockpit of which is illustrated here. Despite an advanced degree of automation in flight control, navigation and attack functions, the inevitable proliferation of main systems, and of related stand-bys and alternatives, can keep the pilot (figuratively speaking) well on his toes. The key numbering in our main drawing starts on the control panel and con- tinues respectively on left and right sides. The details were assembled from various unclassified sources. The schematic diagram below traces the flow and exchange of information in the largely integrated flight systems, using a single source of information for several systems. The remarkable over-the-shoulder view above was caught by a wide-angle lens in the rear cockpit of an F-105F two-seater as it emerged from a roll over snow-flecked Southern Germany. Abbreviations in diagram belcw: ADI, attitude director indicator; AFCS, auto flight control system (autopilot); AMI, airspeed Mach indicator; AVVI, altitude vertical velocity indicator; HSI, horizontal situation indicator; VAI, variable-area intake.
