fUCHT International supplement, 27 February, 1964 (ACD.3 is only 17ft in length yet in production form will carry eight pas- sengers) first cost in terms of work potential will be very realistic." Mr Gray adds: "It may be worth mentioning that the power units on ACD.3 are Martlett V.W.s (two). These have been specially prepared by Brook- lands Engineering, Cobham, and the most important modification has been to turn out the crankcase and fit a thrust bearing. There have been other modi- fications to the lubricating system and carburation. They are extensively cad- mium plated and treated with an Epoxy protective finish." The address of Air Cushion Develop- ment Ltd is Purlieu House, Dibden Purlieu, Hants. Symposium at Swansea The following announcement is made by the Engineering Department of the University College of Swansea:— "A research symposium will be held at the University College of Swansea to review the existing state of knowledge and to exchange information on air- cushion craft and allied subjects. It is proposed that a relatively small number of papers should be briefly introduced by the authors, followed by open dis- cussion. It is not intended that the papers should necessarily be records of completed work, but they should also be concerned with the current work, theories and thoughts of the writer. In this way it is hoped that the meetings Air-Cushion Vehicles will provide a stimulus for the exchanges of up-to-date information. "The number of participants will be limited to approximately 40, so that accommodation can be provided in a Hall of residence at an approximate cost of £2 per day. An additional fee would be charged to cover the running cost of the symposium. The introductory meet- ing will be held after dinner on the evening of Tuesday July 21, and a full programme of meetings and demonstra- tions will be arranged for the following two days." Solent Service Proposed "' ' A new type of 120-ton ACV, accom- modating 30 cars and 150 passengers, is proposed for a ferry service across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. The journey would take less than ten minutes and fares would be approximately as at present. The sponsoring group is headed by Mr Desmond Norman, joint manag- ing director of Britten-Norman Ltd, who is reported as saying: "The sad thing is the British people do not seem willing to put money into things of this kind. We have approached two leading merchant banks in the City, and they said they did not think normal risk money would be available. This is because it is the first project of its kind. If this were 1864 instead of 1964 the risk money would be there." Mr Norman is also reported to have said that he estimated that a Channel service with ACVs could be operating before the tunnel is built. Hovercraft Believed to be the First north-seeking gyro compass to be used in any air-cushion vehicle, this specially adapted Arma-Brown instrument manufactured by S. G. Brown Ltd (a Hawker Siddeley company) has been installed in the Denny D.2 now undergoing Admiralty trials. The compass is placed centrally in the driver's position in an anti- vibration mounting and incorporates an azimuth ring to enable it to be used for taking navigational bearings. In front of the driver is a small two-dial synchro-repeater providing coarse/fine indication of gyro compass heading . - would, he said, turn the Channel tunnel into a white elephant. Associated with the Solent venture is Mr E. W. H. Gifford, author of the article "Berthing and Handling of Hover-ferries" which appeared in our March 1963 issue. Carabao Demonstrations Representatives of military and other US governmental agencies were to witness demonstrations of the Bell Carabao on the Potomac River at Boiling Air Force Base during a period beginning on January 23. The demon- Kawasaki Ram Wing Appraised on pages 29-30a of this issue is a report on the Kawasaki KAG-3 ram-wing craft shown in these photographs. The captions provided read (top to bottom): 1, at rest (in summer); 2, the third trial over rough water (in summer); 3, the second trial over still water (in summer); 4, the first trial over still water (in winter) 17
