446 FLIGHT International, 19 March 1964 AIR COMMERCE... Chinese Viscount Fleet was completed last week when the last of six aircraft passed through Hong Kong on its delivery flight. Lufthansa's SST Positions reserved with the FAA (see last week's issue) are 81, 84 and 89. The 200th DC-8 was delivered by Douglas to United Air Lines on March 13. The aircraft was a DC-8F. —and the First DC-9 received its first rivet, driven into the canopy structure, from Mr Donald Douglas Jr on March 5. KLM Convair 440s Sold Mohawk Airlines have bought three KLM Convair 440s for approximately £363,000. Delivery will be in April. UAL One-Class Service has now been extended from short routes to the transcontinental New York - Los Angeles/San Francisco/ Seattle routes. Eastern Air Lines Loss Eastern Air Lines report a net loss of £13Jm in 1963. The airline blames the aftermath of a 1962 strike and "too small a jet fleet." Mr W. F. Rimmer to Retire Mr W. F. Rimmer, chief flight operations inspector in the Ministry of Aviation, retires on March 31 after 35 years in civil aviation. Slick DC-4 Crash A Slick DC-4 crashed on approach to Logan International Airport, Boston, on March 10, killing the two pilots and a timber yard worker. Irish Sales Effort Irish International Airlines launched on March 9 what they describe as "the largest airline sales drive ever con- centrated in the West of England." Lasting ten days, it is promoting transatlantic services to the USA from Bristol via Ireland. PIA Visit to China A Pakistani delegation arrived in China on March 9 to inspect operating facilities for the proposed PIA services to Canton and Shanghai which, according to present plans, will start in June. IAC 748 Plans According to Indian Airlines Corporation's new general manager, Mr J. S. Parekh, IAC hope to have 40-50 Indian-built Avro 748s in service before the end of India's Fourth Plan, i.e., by March 1971. Lufthansa 727 Service On April 26 Lufthansa's regular Boeing 727 service will be opened on the route Frankfurt - Barcelona- Madrid. The aircraft will be introduced on to the London service on May 10. Trident Earns Money The first fare-paying passenger service by a BEA Trident took place on March 11 when 79 passengers expecting to fly on a BEA Comet 4B from London to Copenhagen found themselves embarking on a Trident. Full services begin on April 1. KLM Pilots for Japan The first of seven KLM captains have started work with All Nippon Airways. They are flying Viscounts. KLM have 70 pilots on lease to other airlines; 130 pilots have left the company although so far, according to Interavia, there have been no pilots dismissed. Colombian DC-3 Crash A DC-3 of Lineas Aereas Taxader Colombia crashed on March 8 on a flight from Pereira to Bogota. All 25 passengers and three crew died. The aircraft was on the approach within 4min of landing at Bogota's Eldorado Airport; the crash was near Madrid, six miles from Bogota. DC-3 Crash near Chicago A DC-3 of Snow Valley Airlines crashed on approach to Chicago's O'Hare Airport on March 9, killing the co-puot and seriously injuring the pilot. All 28 passengers and the third crew member escaped without serious injury. The aircraft was on a ski charter flight. KLM and the Caravelle According to reports from The Hague Sud have offered KLM a discount of £100,000 per aircraft, and free spares for four years up to a value of over £200,000 p.a., on the purchase of six Caravelles. United and the One-Eleven United's interest in the BAC One- Eleven was the subject of UK newspaper reports last week. Tradi- tionally an operator of Douglas aircraft, UAL are evaluating both the One-Eleven and the DC-9 and say they will choose on technical merit and delivery date. Fairchild Sell More F-27s Four F-27As have been bought from Fairchild by Pacific Air Lines, and a F-27F executive version has been sold to Scott Paper Co of Philadelphia. Pacific Air Lines' F-27 fleet is thus increased to ten. The number of Fairchild F-27s sold is now 107. BUA's Seville Plans. BUA will delay until next year the incorpor- ation of a weekly service London Gatwick - Seville planned to start on May 8. A BUA spokesman says: "Because the rights were granted in December there was not enough time to promote this new route before May. This fact, coupled with the very high fare, has made us decide to put back the start of this service." South African Insurance Group A consortium of South African insurance companies headed by the South African Mutual Fire and General has formed a company called the South African Aviation Insurance Pool to underwrite aviation risks. Mr G. Willett of Orion Insurance and Mr G. Maufs of Willis, Faber and Dumas of London are associated with the project. To Manage Castle Donington The short list of candidates for the appointment of a £3,000-a-year manager of the new East Midlands Airport at Castle Donington is as follows: AVM W. J. Chrisham; AVM J. Worrall; E. C. Dyer, Southampton airport commandant; P. Hadfield, Ministry of Aviation; W. M. Hargreaves, Ministry of Aviation; R. F. Helm, Ground Services (Aircraft Ltd); C. F. Potter, Portsmouth airport manager; and R. A. Read, Jersey deputy airport commandant. Kuwait Airways' general manager, Mr Abdel Rahman el Mishri, disembarking from the Comet which inaugurated his company's new London service on March 2. Behind him is Mr A. I. Atabani, Kuwait Airways' UK district manager. The thrice-weekly flights link Kuwait and Beirut with London via Paris, Geneva or Frankfurt. BOAC have recently entered a pool agreement with Kuwait Airways as well as with MEA on the London - Middle East route
