GIANT FROM GEORGIA LOCKHEED-GEORGIA CO flew the C-141A StarLifter for the first time on December 17, 1963—precisely 60 years after the first powered flight of the Wright Brothers. The future intercontinental workhorse of the Military Air Transport Service lifted off at 214,1381b (more than 100,0001b under the design weight) at 123kt after a roll of 2,500ft, on the 84,0001b thrust of its four Pratt & Whitney TF33 turbofans, and landed at 115kt some 55min later. Four of the five aircraft currently flying are pictured on the ramp at Dobbins AFB, and the company are steadily working up to the planned output of seven StarLifters per month. The present order for MATS is for 132 aircraft, and Lockheed are planning for simultaneous Air Force acceptance and FAA civil certification late this year.
