Austrian Airlines' Caravelle 6R OE-LCA "W/en" at Vienna's Schwechat airport acquired the two Electras previously leased toSports Aloft Inc. Head Office: Meacham Field, Fort Worth,Texas. Executive: R. Amphibious Air Charters Pty Ltd, also knownas Amphair, started operations in 1960 with an ex-RAAF Supermarine Walrus amphibianused for charter flying and weekend joy riding. Amphair has now ceased operationsand the Walrus has been sold to Robert Shute, of Fairfield, NSW, who uses it forcharter work. Ansett in 1936 and the airline's first service was opened that yearbetween Melbourne and Hamilton, the route over which Ansett had previously operatedroad services. In 1952 Ansett took over the flying-boat operator Barrier Reef Airways andin 1953 acquired some of the routes of another flying-boat operator, Trans Oceanic Airways.In 1957 Ansett acquired ANA to become Australia's largest privately owned airline.Butler Air Transport (now Airlines of New South Wales) and its subsidiary QueenslandAirlines and Guinea Airways (now Airlines of South Australia) were subsequently acquiredand, like Ansett-ANA itself, form part of Ansett Transport Industries Ltd, a group ofcompanies engaged in air and road transport and hotel and holiday resort management. In1960 Mandated Airlines, Gibbes Sepik Air- ways and Madang Air Services were alsoacquired by Ansett and now operate as Ansett- MAL. In 1963 a controlling interest wasacquired in Mac.Robertson Miller Airlines Ltd, which continues to operate under its ownname. Ansett-ANA operates an extensive routenetwork covering all States of Australia, also Papua and New Guinea. Services were ex-tended to Darwin in 1961; Ansett-ANA now competes with TAA to serve all Australiancities. Golden Jet services were inaugurated on March 18, 1959, with Electras and Viscount832s, Ansett-ANA being the first non-US airline to operate Electras. Helicopter servicesare operated between the Yarra heliport and Essendon to connect with Electra services inand out of Melbourne. Carpenter & Co Ltd, the aviationassets of which were taken over by Qantas in 1934. Mandated became an independent company, and in 1937 the airline was awardeda contract for passenger, mail and cargo work in New Guinea. Mandated acquired GibbesSepik Airways in the spring of 1960 and Madang Air Services Ltd at the end of 1960;all three carriers were then acquired by Ansett Transport Industries, and the name waschanged to Ansett-Mandated Airlines. Ansett- MAL now operates scheduled services fromLae to many points in New Guinea including Goroka, Wau, Port Moresby and Rabaul,besides multi-stop local service routes from Wewak and Madang. Antilles Air Service operates regular services inthe French West Indies to the islands of Marie-Galante, St Bartheiemy, St Martin andDesirade. APSA—see Aerolineas Peruanas. Aquilas Venezolanas SA is a Venezuelan non-scheduled operator that operates a Curtiss C-46, probably on freight charters.Fleet: one C-46. Aramco—The Arabian American Oil Co—hassince 1947 operated its own Aviation Depart- ment based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia insupport of its oil-drilling, producing and ex- ploration activities. Approximately 40 percent of the flights are scheduled and 60 per cent are special flights for executive man-agement, student transportation, emergency medical, photo reconnaissance and otherrequirements. Argonaut Airways Corp is a US intrastateairline operating scheduled passenger and cargo services within the state of Florida.Argonaut is also authorised to conduct inter- state, international and overseas charterflights. On order: one DC-4, oneC-46. Ariana Afghan Airlines Co Ltd was founded in1955 with the assistance of Indamer Co Ltd. The Afghanistan Government has a 51 percent interest and Pan American has a 49 per cent holding. Domestic scheduled servicesbegan in 1957 with DC-3s. PanAm is respon- sible for technical and operational assistanceand for training Afghan staff. Ariana oper- ates the "Marco Polo" route from Kabul toBeirut via Kandahar, Teheran and Damascus. Other services link Kabul to Amritsar, Karachiand Delhi, and to points in Afghanistan. Services to Peshawar and Lahore are to startshortly. Pilgrim flights to Jeddah are also made. Associated Airlines (Pty) Ltd operate privateair services in Australia on behalf of the parent companies, the Broken Hill Pty Co and Con-solidated Zinc. Atlanta Airways is a recently formed charteroperator registered in Liberia that started operations with an ex-Northwest DC-4. It isnot certain if Atlanta Airways is Still active. Fleet: one DC-4. Atlantic Helicopters Ltd offers charter servicesand also undertakes aerial prospecting and seeding, frost control and fish cultivation,aerial advertising, aerial survey and pest control.Head Office: 851 Mill Street, Montreal, Quebec.Executives: G.
