Austin Airways was founded in 1934 and isthe oldest continuously operated airline in Canada. Austin operates extensive non-scheduled services in northern Ontario and western Quebec (principally to James Bay andHudson Bay in Ontario and Quebec) and also undertakes aerial photography, air survey andforest fire patrol work. Charter bases are operated throughout north-eastern Ontario.During 1960 and 1961 Austin co-operated in the development of water-dropping tanks forCanso flying boats engaged in forest fire fight- ing; these enable the Canso to load 650gal ofwater during the take-off run. These tanks can be installed and removed in 4hr, and can alsobe adapted for spraying insecticide or fertilizer. Austria-FIugdienst was formed early in 1958in association with Deutsche Flugdienst after restrictions had been placed on the operationof non-scheduled services between Germany and Austria. Austrian Airlines—Osterreichische Luftver-kehrs Aktiengesellschaft—was founded in September 1957 by agreement between AirAustria and Austrian Airways, neither of which had begun operations. Operationsstarted in April 1958 using Viscount 779s chartered from Fred Olsen Airtransport; theseare now replaced by Viscounts bought from Vickers. Services now extend from Viennato Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Salzburg, Zurich, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Paris, London,Milan, Rome, Bucharest, Belgrade, Athens, Sofia, Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Moscow, Budapest,Linz, Innsbruck, Graz, Klagenfurt, Prague and Venice. Jet services to Istanbul, Beirut, Cairo,Ankara and Damascus are jointly operated under the terms of a commercial agreementwith MEA, SAS and UAA. Autair International Airways is one of theAutair group of companies who commenced flying with helicopters in 1952. Airline opera-tions began in 1960 with ex-BEA DC-3s; Vikings were added to the fleet in 1962 andAmbassadors were introduced in 1963. Two Heralds leased from the manufacturer werealso employed last summer. An extensive network of inclusive tour services to Europeis operated, in addition to passenger and freight contract and charter flying. A dailyLondon - Blackpool service is now operated with Vikings. AVENSA—see Aerovias Venezolanas. Aviacion y Comercio SA—Aviaco or AYC was founded as a private non-scheduled operatorin 1948; scheduled operations began in 1950. Routes radiate from Madrid to points on theSpanish mainland and from Madrid and Barcelona to the Balearic Isles. In NortnAfrica Tangier and Algiers are served; there are also services from Spain to Las Palmas andTeneriffe. Aviaco also operates Marseilles - Majorca, Algiers - Majorca and Seville -Lisbon services. An equipment interchange service with Sabena Caravelles is operatedfrom Brussels to Madrid, Aviaco flying the Caravelle on to Las Palmas. There is also aMadrid - Barcelona - Brussels Convair 440 service. Passenger services with DC-4s andDC-3s connect Las Palmas with El Aaiun, Morocco, and Tenerife. Aviaco also operatesinclusive tour flights to Britain in the summer. Iberia has a 661 per cent holding in Aviaco.A Carvair car-ferry service between Palma, Majorca, Barcelona and Valencia is due tostart in May. Avianca-—Aerovias Nacionales de Colombia SA claims to be the oldest airline in theAmericas and, in fact, it was formed in 1940 as the result of a merger of SCADT A (foundedin 1919) and Servicio Aereo Colombiano. SCADTA was founded by German interestsbut in 1931 Pan American Airways acquired an 80 per cent interest—now reduced to38 per cent. Avianca operates an extensive domestic network and services to Mexico,Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, the USA, Puerto Rico, Panama, Spain, France and Germany.In April 1954 Avianca acquired the second largest Colombian airline, LANSA, and in1952 also took over SAETA. More recently, Avianca has acquired Sociedad Aerea delTolima SA, and Aerotaxi is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Avianca. The companyoperates about 3,700 miles of routes radiating from Guatemala City to points in Guatemalaand also to Miami, New Orleans and Tapa- chula (Mexico).Head Office: Guatemala City.
