FUGHT Infrnathnal, 2 April 1964 23 SMITHS Series 5 Flight Control System enters service with the TRIDENT Air Registration Board approval has been granted for the operation of SMITHS Flight Control System on passenger services in the Hawker Siddeley TRIDENT. The Series 5 is the first duplex autopilot installation in the World to receive certification. It was designed from the outset to give the TRIDENT automatic landing capability. The system will be operated initially at duplex level, to provide automatic en route, approach and auto flare facilities and later extended to triplex level for full automatic landing on passenger service. Another first for Smiths On March 3rd 1964 the Hawker Siddeley Trident made its first ten completely automatic landings using Smiths Multiplex Flight control system.
