516 FLIGHT International, 2 April 1964 WORLD AIRLINE SURVEY . . . KLM—Koninklijke Luchtvaart MaatschappijNV, the Datch national airline, began opera- tions in May 1920. A European network wasestablished, and services to Java began in 1929. Services were begun in the West Indies in 1935and these continued throughout the war, so the company can claim 43 years of continuousoperation. With a present unduplicated route mileageof nearly 150,000 miles, KLM has a network of European routes, a West Indies and CentralAmerican network, and routes between Europe and North, Central and South America; Northand South Africa; the Near, Middle and Far East; and Australia. In 1960 it inauguratedtwo routes to West Africa and now flies to 68 countries. For more than 30 years KLM wasdirected by its founder, the late Dr Albert Plesman. Approximately 70 per cent of thecompany's capital is held by the Dutch Government. Shares are listed on the Amster-dam and New York Stock Exchanges. DC-8s operate North and mid-Atlantic and Far Eastservices and have now been put on to the Polar, South African and South American routes.Head Office: The Hague, Holland. Executives: H. Korean National Airlines was founded underthe Ministry of Transport in 1947, and oper- ated routes radiating from Seoul with StinsonVoyagers. DC-3s were introduced in 1950 shortly before the Korean war stoppedcommercial operations, which were resumed in 1952. The company now operates DC-3 andDC-4 services within South Korea. Kuwait Airways was founded in 1953 asKuwait National Airways, the present name being adopted in 1958. Kuwait Airways iswholly owned by Government and local interests, and although its head office is inKuwait, the commercial and operations departments are based in Beirut (PO Box 4039). BOAC took over the technical manage-ment of Kuwait Airways in June 1958, and in September 1959 British International AirLines, a wholly owned BOAC subsidiary in Kuwait that provided charter and maintenanceservices to the Kuwait Oil Company and the Kuwait Flying Club, was taken over by KuwaitAirways. The Kuwait Government having acquired all Kuwait Airways shares, the com-pany became a Government concern on June 1, 1963 and all its departments will be basedin Kuwait. Kuwait Airways operates services to Bahrain, Doha, Karachi, Bombay, Cairo,Beirut, Jerusalem, Damascus and to Baghdad. Lake Central Airlines began services inNovember 1949 and serves 4,207 miles of routes in eight states of the mid-central USA.In 1955 employees of the airline bought the company's entire stock. During 1960 LakeCentral was authorized to extend its services east as far as Washington, DC, and Baltimore,serving a total of 50 points. Services to these communities which Lake Central was newlyauthorized to serve were inaugurated during 1961. During 1964 Lake Central expects toacquire two more Convair 340s and retire some of its DC-3s. Five or six Nord 262s arelikely to be ordered. Fleet: one DC-7C, one DC-7. Lapplandsflyg is the largest bush operator inSweden, and undertakes a variety of charter services.Head Office: Porjus, Sweden. Executive: Bertil Johansson, managing direc-tor. Fleet: three Norseman, two Cessna 185, twoBell 47G-2, three Agusta-Bell 47J-2. Laurentian Air Services was founded in 1936 and operates charter nights and recreationalflights. Maintenance and overhaul is also undertaken.Head Office: Ottawa, Ont, Canada. Executives: A. B. Laurentidc Aviation Ltd operates charter ser-vices with both light aircraft and helicopters, also flying training, aerial photography andaerial advertising services. Fleet: Cessnas. Leavens Bros Ltd, which operated passengerservices between Windsor, Ontario, and Pelee Island in Lake Erie, using one Apache andone Tri-Pacer, was originally formed in 1927. It was incorporated as Leavens Bros AirServices in 1935 and was reorganized under its present name in 1953. Lebanese Air Transport (Charter) Co SAL is aLebanese charter operator that began opera- tions in June 1961 with an ex-Jordan Inter-national Airlines DC-4. This carrier concen- trated on charters between the Middle Eastand Europe but is now believed to have ceased operations. Head Office: PO Box 331, Immeuble Sehnaoui,Rue des Capuchins, Beirut. Executive: Marouf Shaar, president.Fleet: one DC-4, one PZL-102.B Kos. Lebanese International Airways—LIA com-menced scheduled services in January 1956 and now operates twice a week between Beirut,Milan and Paris with a Boeing 720B. Other services connect Beirut with Teheran, Kuwait,Baghdad, Bahrain and Doha. Sabena provided technical and operational assistance but hasnow terminated all collaboration with LIA. Ex-American Airlines DC-7s were acquired in1963, and Carlos and Alphonse Arida now have a holding in Alia-Royal Jordanian.Head Office: Rue Justinian, Beirut, Lebanon. Leeward Islands Air Transport Services Ltd was formed in 1956 as a subsidiary of BWIA, who have a 51 per cent holding. Mr H. L.Kimelman is the largest private shareholder in LIAT.
