On order: seven Boeing 727. National Airways Corporation (Pty) Ltd, untilrecently known as National Air Charters (Pty) Ltd, started operations in 1958 and by takingover several other charter operators has be- come the largest non-scheduled operator inSouth Africa. It is now a subsidiary of Fisher and Simmons, the Johannesburg motor com-pany. In May 1962 National acquired United Air Services (formerly Transvaal Air Charters)and late in 1961 it took over Swazi Air Ltd, Swaziland's only operator, which is licensedby the Swaziland authorities to operate sche- duled services from Matsapa to Johannesburgand Durban; the South Africans have not yet granted reciprocal rights. NAC has alsobought out Fetch-Air and Tank Aircraft since it started operations; it also owns PretoriaAir Services (Pty) Ltd, OFS Air Services (Pty), Ltd, and Natal Aviation (Pty), Ltd. It hasacquired a controlling interest in Bechuana- land Air Safaris, which operates scheduled ser-vices in Bechuanaland and a holding in Southern Aviation of Port Elizabeth.Head Office: Baragwanath, Johannesburg, South Africa. Newfoundland Air Transport was formed in1961 and operates a service between Notre Dame Bay and Twillingate, Newfoundland,using Cessna 180s, as well as charter services. New York Airways—NYA was formed in 1949with the object of operating scheduled heli- copter services in the New York area. Mailoperations between the New York airports were inaugurated on October 15, 1952. Mailservices were subsequently opened to suburban areas, and passenger services linking NewYork International, La Guardia and Newark airports began on July 8, 1953. This company was founded by Act of Parliament in 1945 to take over and expandthe operations of Cook Strait Airways Ltd and Union Airways of New Zealand Ltd, whichwere then taken over in August 1946. In October 1947 Air Travel (NZ) Ltd was alsotaken over. Following the change of Gov- ernment in 1949 attempts were made to sellNZNAC but these were not successful. Fox Moths, Rapides, Lockheed L.lOs and Lode-stars were used in the early years and Herons were employed for a time. Friendship servicesbegan in December 1960. NZNAC operates nearly 4,000 miles of routes in and betweenNorth and South Islands. Nigeria Airways or WAAC (Nigeria) Ltd, wasan associate of BOAC and commenced opera- tions on October 1, 1958, taking over theNigerian services formerly operated by West African Airways Corporation, which it suc-ceeds. WAAC had been founded in 1946 by the West African territories of Nigeria, theGold Coast (now Ghana), Sierra Leone and Gambia. Most of Nigeria Airways networkis in Nigeria, but regional services extend as far as Dakar and as far south as Leopoldville,and services from Lagos and Kano to London via Madrid, Rome and Frankfurt are operatedwith Boeing 707s chartered from BOAC. In March 1961 the Nigerian Government whichheld 51 per cent, bought the shares of BOAC (16J per cent) and Elder Dempster (36f percent). Head Office: Lagos, Nigeria.Executives: Chief O. I. Nitto Aviation operates taxi and charterservices in Japan as well as regular services between Osaka and Shirahama and Osakaand Tokushima. Survey is also undertaken. On order: one Nord 262. Nordair Ltd was established in 1957 by themerger of Mont Laurier Aviation and Boreal Airways. Since its formation Nordair hasenjoyed a steady expansion and presently operates services out of Montreal to Roberval, Schefferville and Fort Chimo in Quebec, toVal d'Or and Great Whale on Hudson Bay, to Frobisher Bay, Cape Dyer and Hall Beachon Baffin Island and to Resolute Bay on Corn- wallis Island. Herald services were operatedbetween Montreal, Kingston, Toronto, Hamil- ton, Sarnia and Windsor during February-August 1962, but this service had to be dis- continued through lack of traffic and theHeralds transferred to Maritime Central Air- ways. Charter flights are also operated, ifnecessary with ski-equipped DC-3s, and ice reconnaissance and geodetic survey work isalso undertaken. Nordair (Nordic Airways), not to be confusedwith the Canadian operator of the same name, is a Danish charter operator that started opera-tions on February 4, 1961 and specializes in charter and IT flights, especially to theMediterranean, using 80-passenger ex-Ameri- can Airlines DC-6s. Nordair has an optionon the purchase of two Boeing 707-023 Bs from American Airlines, and was formed by Danishhotel and restaurant interests. Norfolk Airways Ltd has operated joy-ridingand charter services since 1952 and now specializes in executive charter work, operatingan Aztec principally on behalf of the Norwich Union Insurance Society.Head Office: 8-10 Castle Walk, Norwich, Norfolk. Norronafly A/S is a Norwegian charter andtaxi operator that acts as a Piper distributor. Air survey work is also undertaken with Piperand Cessna light aircraft.
