Qantas Empire Airways—QEA can trace itshistory back to 1920 when QANTAS (Queens- land and Northern Territory Aerial Services)was founded on November 16 of that year, and on November 2, 1922, the companyopened its first regular service between Charleville and Cloncurry. This was the firstair service in Eastern Australia and it was operated by Armstrong Whitworth FK.8biplanes. Qantas Empire Airways Ltd was foundedin. January 1934 by Qantas and Imperial Airways to operate the Singapore - Brisbanesection of the England - Australia air route then about to be established. In December1959 Qantas and BOAC celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Kangaroo Routefrom Sydney to London through Asia. Qantas was the first airline to operateround-the-world services through San Fran- cisco and New York; these were inauguratedon January 14,1958, with Super Constellations. Qantas operates five services a week on thePacific from Sydney to San Francisco—one a fortnight continuing to Vancouver and threea week continuing to London via New York. On the Kangaroo route there are five Boeingservices a week from Sydney to London via the Middle East. Qantas commenced trans-Pacific service in 1954 when it took over the Sydney - Fiji - Honolulu - San Francisco andVancouver route of BCPA. A domestic service withinSouthern Rhodesia is operated between Salis- bury, Fort Victoria, Triangle and Hippo Valleyand a new DC-4 service between Salisbury and the island of Mauritius has been started. Aweekly IT service is operated from Salisbury to Kariba, Kafue Game Reserve and VictoriaFalls from July to October, when the Game Park is open. Cargo operationsbegan between Puerto Rico, Miami and New York in 1947; and in 1951 the comnanybecame a certificated all-cargo carrier between New York - Puerto Rico and Miami-PuertoRico. In 1955 Riddle was certificated to serve 13 additional cities in the US. The majorityshareholders in Riddle are William R. Price, Robert M. Hewitt and General DynamicsCorporation.
