Sierra Leone Airways was formed early in 1958and operates internal services in the territory. These services were previously run under anagreement between the Sierra Leone Govern- ment and Nigeria Airways, but a new agree-ment was signed in 1961 with British United Airways who introduced Twin Pioneers leasedfrom Scottish Aviation on Sierra Leone Air- ways routes. The present Twin Pioneer isowned by the Government of Sierra Leone and SLA has exclusive rights to operate it.SLA began a non-stop weekly Britannia ser- vice from Freetown to London on November16, 1%1, using BUA Britannias. Slick Airways was founded in 1946 and beganoperations as a contract cargo carrier. Sche- duled services were authorized in 1949.Financial difficulties led the company to sus- pend all scheduled services in the spring of1958, but military charter flying and the leasing of aircraft continued. During 1962 Slickoperated L.1049H Super Constellations under various contracts and charters for MATS in the Pacific. The company restarted regular,scheduled freight services during April 1962 as Slick Airways, a division of the Slick Corpora-tion. Stopping services are operated across America from New York to Los Angeles andSan Francisco. Other divisions of Slick are the Illinois Shade Cloth Co and PulverisingMachinery Co. Its services were later taken over by Rutas Aereas de Colombia Ltda—RAS, to whom KLM supplied equipment, but although RAS ceased operations in 1961,SAM continues to operate as a separate com- pany. The airline was reorganized under itspresent title in 1963. A domestic network is operated from Cali, Bogota and Medellin tofive other points. Societa Aerea Mediterranea — SAM wasformed in November 1960 as a non-IATA carrier affiliated to Alitalia, who owns 90 percent of its capital, to specialize in IT and charter flights, particularly between the UK.and Italy. Operations were started with two DC-6Bs provided by Alitalia and scheduledDC-3 services between Venice and Trieste began in December 1961. SAM has since takenover several other domestic routes from Alitalia. The original SAM was formed withState-owned capital in 1928 as the first Italian national airline, and after absorbing a numberof other Italian carriers changed its name to Ala Littoria during 1934-35; as such itoperated services from Italy to North Africa as well as in Europe.Head Office- 3 Via Barberini, Rome.
