Somali Airlines is reported to be the name of anew Somalian carrier to be formed by the Somali Government and Alitalia, who willhave a 50 per cent holding in the new airline and will train its pilots and ground staff. Sorfly A/S is a Norwegian charter operatorthat undertakes taxi and ambulance flying and the operation of a flying school.Head Office: Kristiansand, Norway. Fleet: one Gemini, one Cessna 180, oneAutocrat. South African Airways—SAA was formed in1934 when it took over Union Airways. The airline is now owned and controlled by theGovernment through the South African Rail- ways and Harbours Administration. In 1935SAA acquired South West African Airways. SAA now operates a network of domestic andregional routes in the Republic and South West Africa, Southern Rhodesia and Mozambique.Services are operated from Johannesburg to Europe, until 1963 via Salisbury, Nairobi,Brazzaville, Athens, Rome, Zurich, Frankfurt, Paris and London. The stop at Nairobi hasnow been replaced by a different routing to Europe through Luanda (Angola) and LasP'almas, with Lisbon an additional stop on several services. There is also a once-fort-nightly Johannesburg - Perth service via Mauritius and the Cocos Islands. Coach-classservices are now operated on several domestic routes. Southeastern Airlines commenced "third level"passenger services in 1963 with six round trips daily between Anderson, South Carolina, andJacksonville, Florida. Southern Air Transport Inc is a US non-scheduled and supplemental carrier awarded interim operating authority in September 1962.Operations had begun in 1959. Southern Airways Inc was founded in July1943 and began operations in June 1949. Over 60 cities are served in the states of Georgia,Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Florida, North and South Carolina andVirginia. Permanent certification was granted in May 1955. Southern Cross Airfreighters Ltd is a NewZealand carrier formed in 1962 to operate non-scheduled cargo services from Aucklandto small towns and rural districts. Head Office: Auckland, New Zealand.Fleet: Norseman. Southern Scenic Air Services Ltd is a NewZealand taxi and charter operator. In 1960 Southern Scenic started a regular, scheduledservice between Queenstown, Cromwell, Alexandra and Dunedin, South Island, usingD.H. Rapides. A Queenstdwn - Milford Sound service is now the only scheduled one operated.Agricultural aviation is also undertaken. Head Office: No 1 R.D., Cromwell, NewZealand. Executives: F. J. South Pacific Air Lines commenced servicesfrom Honolulu to Tahiti on April 2, 1960, using an ex-TWA Super Constellation; until Septem-ber 20,1960 the Bora Bora - Papeete sector of this route was operated by an RAI flying-boat,but the entire flight is now made non-stop by Super Constellation once a week. SouthPacific was formed in 1953 as Dollar Airlines Inc, a successor to the former Dollar steamshipline, which used to operate trans-Pacific services. South Pacific bought out TransOceanic Airways, an Australian carrier which went into liquidation, together with thisoperator's two Solents, and a third Solent was acquired from Britain. It was planned to starta flying-boat service from Honolulu to Tahiti in the summer of 1956 using Christmas Islandas a refuelling point, but the use of this island for H-bomb tests rendered this project abor-tive. PanAm recently took over South Pacific's Honolulu - Tahiti route and the company isnot now operating scheduled services. Head Office: 311 California Street, SanFrancisco, California. Executives: R. Spantax SA is a Spanish independent airline formed in October 1959 that concentrated 529 initially on flying passengers and freight fromLas Palmas in support of oil-drilling operations in the Spanish Sahara. More recently charterand inclusive tour traffic, especially to the UK- has been developed in co-operation with theprincipal Spanish and foreign travel agencies. Spantax has also provided Air Mauritanie withDC-3s and crews. Stagecoach Airways Inc operates taxi and charter services in Texas.Head Office: San Antonio International Airport, Texas. Fleet: Model C50 Twin Bonanza, Lockhe L.12A. Standard Airways Inc is a US supplementalcarrier specializing in flights to Hawaii, and operating "Pink Cloud" inclusive tours twiceweekly to the islands from the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas. Standard is reportedto have ceased operations. Head Office: Lockheed Air Terminal, Bur-bank, California. Fleet: three DC-7, one L.1049G Super Con-stellation, one L.I049A Super Constellation, five L.749 Constellation, two L.049 Constella-tion, two DC-6B, two DC-3, one Beech 18, one Goose. Starways operates scheduled services fromLiverpool to London, Glasgow, Chester, Newquay and Cork, seasonal services fromLiverpool to Ostend and from Glasgow, New- castle, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham andLondon to Newquay, from Ostend to Man- chester and from Glasgow to Exeter. Starwaysbecame a wholly-owned subsidiary of British Eagle in 1963 and its routes linking London,Chester, Liverpool and Glasgow are now- operated by British Eagle.Head Office: Speke Airport, Liverpool 24.
