Transportes Aereos Beni is a Bolivian operator of charter and non-scheduled services that has recently acquired an ex-Austral DC-4. Fleet: one DC-4. Fleet: Friendship (chartered from TAA), twoDove. 533 Trans-Texas Airways Convair 240s fly routes in the southern USA Transportes Aereos Jalisco—TAJ operatestwo DC-3s on charter services within Mexico. Transportes Aereos Nacionales SA—TANAirlines was founded by Honduras private interests in 1947 for the operation of contractcargo flights. The company built up sub- stantial cargo traffic and in 1950 scheduledpassenger and freight operations were begun. There is now a small US private holding in thecompany. Transportes Aereos Orientales—TAO operatesregional services in the Oriente district of Ecuador, and started operations in 1958.Twenty-two centres are served by TAO; 11 by a Ju 52/3m and the rest, with short airstrips,by a Cessna 180 and Norseman. Transportes Aereos Portugueses SARL—TAPwas organized in 1944 as a division of the Civil Aviation Department. Its first route, betweenLisbon and Madrid, was opened in September 1946. Services to Angola and Mozambiquewere opened in the following year. A large part of the stock of TAP is now privatelyowned. TAP operates domestic and cabotage services from Lisbon to Oporto, Porto Santoand Santa Maria in the Azores, Bissao, Sao Tom6, Luanda, Beira and Lourenco Marquesand international services to Madrid, Paris, London, Geneva, Frankfurt and Las Palmas.In 1960 TAP and Panair do Brasil, following an agreement signed by the Governments ofPortugal and Brazil, inaugurated "Friendship Flights" between Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro,via Ilha do Sal, Recife and Sao Paulo using Panair DC-7Cs. These flights are limited toPortuguese and Brazilian nationals or foreign- ers resident in both countries, and fares arewell below IATA rates. Transportes Aereos Terrestres S A—TATS A isa Mexican carrier that operates a daily Ford Trimotor service between Tayoltita and Mazatlan on the Pacific coast of Mexico.Head Office: Avenida Juarez 117, Despacho 505, Mexico, D.F.Fleet: Ford 5-AT-B Trimotor. , Transportes Aeriens du Gabon (Transgabon) began regular operations in 1951 and now links about 20 places in Equatorial Africa with Libreville. Trans Sierra Airlines is a US intrastate andcontract carrier that operates a DC-3 pur- chased from Mohawk Airlines. Trans-Texas Airways Inc—TTA was foundedin 1940 as Aviation Enterprises and began scheduled operation in October 1947. Theairline now has about 7,500 miles of routes within Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, ArkansasNew Mexico and Mississippi. Trans World Airlines—TWA claims itsorigin in Western Air Express, which was founded in 1925 to bid for an air mail routefrom Los Angeles to Salt Lake City. WAE began mail service in 1926. In 1929 Trans-Continental Air Transport, which had inaugur- ated a combined rail/air transcontinental route,obtained control of Maddux Air Lines. At about the same time Western Air Expressabsorbed Standard Air Lines and then on October 1, 1930, TAT-Maddux and WesternAir Express completed a merger to form Trans- continental & Western Air Inc (TWA). In1934, reconstitution followed the Post Office mail-flying upheaval, and TWA became TransWorld Airlines in 1950. TWA has been res- ponsible for sponsoring some fine aircraft,having issued the specification for the Douglas DC-l/DC-2, the Boeing 307 and the Constel-lation. TWA now has more than 50,000 miles of routes stretching from coast to coast of theUSA; across the North Atlantic to Europe, North Africa and Asia as far as Bombay. In1958 the company inaugurated a one-carrier service between California and Florida. In 1959 TWA began non-stop Boeing 707jet services between New York and California, and in November 1959 707 Intercontinentalscommenced services between New York, London and Frankfurt, and also betweenNew York, Paris and Rome, later going as far as Bombay.
