FUGHT International, 2 April 1964 VIASA Convair 880s operate Caribbean services both for the Venezuelan airline and for KLM Head Office: PO Box 566, Sidney, BritishColumbia, Canada. Executives: A. A/S Varangfly started operating in October1961 a thrice-weekly service on the Kirkenes - Alta - Bardufoss route, but this service is nolonger operated. Since December 18, 1961, A/S Varangfly has operated the Kirkenes -Ivalo route with a Beech Baron in co-operation with Finnair; but in May 1963 this route wastaken over by Finnair. Yarig—Empresa de Viacao Aerea Rio Grand-ense was founded in 1927, with the tech- nical assistance of the German CondorSyndicate, for the operation of local services. The company now has a very extensive routesystem in Brazil and also operates services to New York, Montevideo and Buenos Aires, toLos Angleles via Lima, Bogota, Panama City and Mexico City and to Miami via Caracas andSanto Domingo. In 1951 Varig took over Aerea Geral, which was operating about 1,500miles of domestic services. More than 85 per cent of Varig's capital is held by companyemployees, either privately or through the Foundation of Varig employees. There is asmall government holding. Varig began Caravelle services to New York on December21, 1960 but 707s have replaced Caravelles on the New York services. 707 services began onJuly 20, 1960. Varig purchased the whole of REAL in August 1961 and absorbed its fleetand routes. "Air Bridge" services are oper- ated between Rio, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte,Curitiba and Brasilia. Yene/.olana International de Aviacion—VIASAwas formed in 1961 at the instigation of the Venezuelan Government to take over theinternational routes of Avensa and LAV, who now concentrate on domestic services. VIASAis owned 55 per cent by Venezuelan private interests, including LAV and Avensa. KLMprovides technical and operational assistance, and operates DC-8 services to Paris, Amster-dam, Lisbon, Madrid and Rome for VIASA. These are integrated with the DC-8 servicesof KLM and Iberia. Other DC-8 services are operated to Panama City, Bogota, Curacao and Lima. Convair 880s operate services toMaracaibo, Curacao, Kingston, Santo Dom- ingo, Miami, New Orleans and New York.Convair 880s are leased to KLM for the latter" s Caribbean routes. Viacao Aerea Sao Paulo SA—VASP was founded in 1934 and began scheduled opera-tions in 1935. Most of the company's stock is held by Sao Paulo city, State and MunicipalBank. The company operates more than 16,000 miles of domestic routes from Belemin the north to Porto Alegre in the south, and connecting several state capitals to Brasilia.High-frequency services are operated in pool with Cruzeiro and Varig over the Rio - SaoPaulo and Rio - Belo Horizonte - Brasilia routes—the Ponte Aerea (Air Bridge). In 1962VASP acquired complete financial control of Loide and NAB and their operations havenow been integrated into those of VASP. Fleet: one Cessna 180, one Howard DGA-15 Victoria Falls Airways (Pvt) Ltd operates sight-seeing flights over the Victoria Falls with Rapides, and undertakes charter work as wellas wild game viewing flights. The company is an affiliate of Rhodesia United Air Carriers.Head Office: Livingstone, Northern Rhodesia. Fleet: three Rapide, one Tri-Pacer. Vieques Airways Corp was authorized by theCAB in 1961 to operate air taxi services between points in Puerto Rico and the VirginIslands. It is not known what equipment is used.Head Office: Puerto Rico International Air- port, San Juan. Virgin Island Airways was authorized by theCAB in 1963 to operate air taxi services in Puerto Rico linking San Juan, Fajardo,Vieques and Culebra. It is not known what equipment is used.Head Office: St Thomas, US Virgin Islands. Wardair Canada Ltd. This Canadian bushoperator's history goes back to 1946 when Maxwell Ward started operations fromYellowknife as the Polaris Charter Co Ltd with a single Fox Moth, flying charters insupport of the rapidly developing mining industry of the Northwest Territory. WardairLtd was formed in 1952 to continue this work, and started operations with an Otter. Thecompany's name was changed in 1961 to Wardair Canada Ltd, and its licence is nowamended to include international charters. An ex-KLM DC-6B has been added to the fleet.Head Office: Macdonald Hotel. Westair is the operating name adopted by theAviation Corp of Seattle, a US non-scheduled and supplemental carrier awarded a two-yearoperating certificate in January 1959. West Coast Airlines, Inc—WCA is the oldestUS local service airline in point of actual service. WCA was founded in 1941 under thelaws of the State of Washington for the opera- tion of passenger, mail and express services inthe Pacific Coast area, but the CAB held the application over until after the war and onlygranted certificates in 1946; operations began on December 5 that year. In August 1952WCA took over Empire Air Lines, inaugurated in September 1946. WCA was the first airlinein the world to operate Friendships, with which services were started on September28, 1958. WCA now serves over 60 cities along some 4,000 route miles in Washington,Oregon, Idaho, California, Montana and Utah. Services now extend over the Canadianborder to Calgary, Alberta and as far south as San Francisco. WCA has now acquired34 per cent of the outstanding stock of Pacific Air Lines.
