Wien Alaska employ two Fairchild f"-27Bs on services within Alaska WORLD AIRLINE SURVEY . . . Western Airlines Inc—WAL claims to be theUnited States' oldest airline, having been founded in 1925 as Western Air Express. Thepresent name was legally adopted on March 11, 1941. WAL now operates 9,474 miles ofroutes in the Western and mid-West states, flying as far east as Minneapolis/St Paul,northwards across the Canadian border to Calgary and southwards to Mexico City."Thriftair" services linking Los Angeles with San Francisco and Las Vegas using 92-passenger DC-6Bs were introduced in 1962 and 1963 respectively. A twice-weekly freight service from Montreal and points in northern Quebecand Labrador is now operated. Ex-TCA North Stars were acquired in 1961. World Wide Aviation Ltd, not to be confusedwith operators at Burbank and Dorval with similar names, is a British independent formedin July 1960. Operations, mainly long-range charters, started in December of that year anda DC-4 was leased to Sabena in January 1961 for United Nations charter work in theCongo. The operations and engineering base was at Gatwick. World Wide's E licence wasrevoked by the ATLB in 1962 and the company is no longer operating. Negotiationsare at present proceeding regarding recapital- ization and World Wide hopes to recommenceoperations in late 1964-65. World Wide Helicopters is one of the world'sleading charter operators of helicopters and has for some years operated fixed-wing air-craft. All these are wholly owned subsidiaries of World WideHelicopters Ltd. In July 1958 World Wide acquired a 40 per cent interest in Curtiss-Reid Flying Services Ltd of Montreal. Flight crews and ground staff are Yemeni and Jugoslavian,except for the Russian equipment which is flown and maintained by Russians.Head Office: Taiz, Yemen. Youngstown Airways Inc is a US air taxioperator and Beechcraft distributor who has ordered 15 Aero Jet Commanders for leasingout to business houses, together with crews. Zambia Airways is the new Northern Rhode-sian national airline formed as a subsidiary of Central African Airways Corporation afterthe break-up of the Federation of Rhodesia- Nyasaland in 1963. Zambia's chairman andboard will be appointed by the parent CAA. DC-3s and Beavers will be used, chiefly ondomestic routes, and the DC-3s will be leased back for operation by CAA, who will providetechnical assistance and staff. Fleet: DC-3, Beaver. Zantop Air Transport Inc is a US supplementalcarrier that flies Logair services with Argosies for the US Air Force Logistics Command.Zantop also does a good deal of contract charter business for Ford, General Motorsand Chrysler, flying urgently needed auto- mobile components from Detroit to sub-assembly plants.
