552 FLIGHT International, 2 April 1964 INDUSTRY International Trident Flight Control As has been noted on previous occasions, notably in our main Trident description on May 2 last year, SPERRY have made a major contribution to the Trident flight control system in pursu- ance of a consortium set up between Smiths and Sperry early in 1959. Sperry in fact make the complete attitude system, the majority of the manometric repeater instru- ments, the directional gyros and their mountings and a part of the Flight Director system. They also provide the Vickers engine-driven pumps and ancillaries for the hydraulic system. Excluding the latter, more than 27 Sperry units and at least three-quarters of" the basic instrument displays are produced. The attitude system consists of three vertical reference units, two attitude direc- tors, two attitude director display amplifiers, two rate gyro units and one yaw rate gyro unit, together with the associated special mounting trays to facilitate replacement without recalibration and in situ functional testing. In the air data system, Sperry provide two airspeed indicators, two vertical speed indicators and two Machmeters, which are driven from a Smiths air data computer. The directional gyros are of the CL.11 Rotorace type. An essential element of automatic ap- proach or landing systems is, of course, the radio equipment. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES are here in the unique position of providing not only the radio altimeters required for flare-out, but the ground-based ILS system as well. Both these have been the subject of intensive development over recent years. The Trident has initially two, and will later have three, S.T.C. STR-40 radio altimeters specially adapted for auto- matic landing. The ILS system already installed at many major airfields in Britain is the STAN. 7/8/9. For communications and navigation, the Trident is to have the 60-series radio equip- ment developed by the MARCONI COMPANY. Appropriate units will be duplexed or triplexed. The 60-series has been developed specifically for improved reliability and maintainability. W. Wilson (London) Expand Well known as stockists of light alloys and other aircraft materials, W. Wilson & Sons (London) Ltd have recently extended their sales premises at 114 Nightingale Road, Wood Green, London N22 (Bowes Park 8431). Among their customers are Hawker Siddeley Aviation, to whom light alloy sheet for the Trident is being supplied.
