FLIGHT International, 2 April 1964 . I n Given time, any water or dirt that may be present in aviation fuel will settle. Therefore, each time Shell aviation fuels are transferred from one container to another, they are allowed a calculated 'settling time' according to the type of fuel and the depth of the container. Once any impurities have settled, clean, 'dry' aviation fuel is drawn off from the top of the tank by floating suction- This model shows how fine dirt and water particles separate out to the bottom of the tank, and how fuel is withdrawn from the top by floating suction. In practice, no fuel will be passed to the next stage of delivery until this settling process has been completed. Even then, the fuel will be checked and checked again to ensure that only clean, 'dry,' on-specification fuel reaches the aircraft. Shell Aviation duality Control System
