flSGHT International, a April 1964 555 German Jet Executive The prototype HFB 320 Hansa (two General Electric CjblO engines) began its pre-flight ground test pro- gramme on March 18. First static vibration tests were completed by March 26, and systems checks, engine tests and taxi tests are following purchases from the US armed forces, the Royal Navy and several other interested nations (among whom may be named West Germany and Australia). The Spey- engined machines for the Royal Navy will only come into full production in 1967, and may still be in course of delivery as late as 1969. This long-term manufacturing pro- gramme reflects the excellence of the basic design—which, with the highly efficient Rolls-Royce engine, comes close to meeting the mission requirements of the F-111B. In fact, during the TFX competition McDonnell and Allison jointly proposed a Spey-powered Phantom with airframe improvements, showing it to be attractive from a cost/effectiveness viewpoint. Skyvan Escapes Earthquake The first sales tour in the recently renewed sales drive on the Shorts Skyvan freighter has begun. Led by Mr Douglas Scoffham, technical sales manager (aircraft), Shorts' team visited Alaska, where two airlines are interested, and departed from the State a few hours before the disastrous earthquake. The team is now in Australasia, where it is visiting airlines in Australia, Papua, New Guinea and New Zealand. It is then to visit the Philippines, Japan and Hong Kong. Russian Airship Entering Service The first Russian airship to be designed since the war will enter service this week, Moscow Radio reported a few days ago. The craft, built for use in surveying timber resources, was said to have been designed by a team headed by Professor Vorobyev of the Airship Construction Bureau in Leningrad. No structural details were disclosed, but the report gave its length as 50m (164ft); speed as lOOkm/hr (62 m.p.h.) and useful load 1,100kg (2,4251b). Does the FAI Know? Tass, the Russian news agency, made a claim last week for an unusual "world record" on behalf of the Mi-6 helicopter, calling it "the precision record." During bridge-building operations over the river Loyat, near Kholm in the Leningrad region, the helicopter is said to have placed eight five-ton reinforced concrete structures on their supports, in all cases with less than O.75in error. Blackburn Scholarship Applications are being invited for the 1964 £1,000 Robert Blackburn Memorial Trust Open Scholarship, established in 1959 in memory of the aviation pioneer by his widow, Mrs P. E. M. Blackburn. The award, over one year, is to further the technical education in aeronautical engin- eering or a related subject of the scholar- ship winner. Applicants must be over 18, holding an appropriate degree or its equiv- alent and may make their submission to Mr H. W. Paine, of Linklaters and Paine, Solicitors, Barrington House, Gresham Street, London EC2. Avro Old-timers Meet Again Nothing untoward occurred at the 13th annual reunion of the Avro 504 Club. On the contrary, everyone at the well-supported dinner held at the Royal Aero Club, London, last Friday obviously enjoyed himself. Perhaps, as the members and regular guests grow a little older, these reunions become a little quieter—party games seem inappropriate for those who are now nudging or just over 80, however spry they may be. This year no one even mentioned those 504 bomb racks. Sir Roy Dobson presided and the guest of honour was the AOC-in-C Flying Training Com- mand, Air Marshal Sir "Gus" Walker. Fred Homes wittily proposed the toast of the company, and Air Cdre John Oliver the guests. There are now 12 new apprentices; this year's winner of the 504 Club trophy, as top A.V. Roe apprentice (out of some 600) is Robin G. Monk. He impressed the old- timers very favourably and made an excellent short speech on receiving his cup, gold links and Avro 504 insignia from Sir Roy. Paris Show Reminder The next Paris Air Salon, the 26th, will be held at Le Bourget from June 11 to 20. Press preview day will be June 10 and technicians' day June 21. French Jet Executive The new SEEMS 760C Paris 3 (two Turbomica Marbore 6 engines) has been flying since February 28. In this picture, taken at Tarbes, fuselage mock-up is visible Rolls-Royce/MAN RB.I53 This new turbofan has been developed jointly by Rolls-Royce at Derby and MAN-Turbomotoren GmbH at Munich, under contract to the German Government. Y/ith a switch-in thrust deflector and reheat it will be fitted to the EWR-SUd VJ I0ID (which will also have RB.I62 lift jets.) The RB.I53, which has initial ratings in the 6,450-7,0551b bracket, will be seen in public for the first time at the Hanover Air Show later this month
