FLIGHT International. 9 April 1964 'yzmm. VISION Decca's important contribution to Eurocontrol IMPORTANT STEP enable them to study the ilems of controlling high 3d air traffic, Eurocontrol — )pe's organisation for the ty of air navigation —has 'red a simulator from a con- ium of three major electronic Panies, Decca Radar of don, CSF of Paris and Tele- en of Berlin. The design and ufacture of all display equip- * will be the responsibility 'ecca Radar —an indication 'e confidence placed in the Pany's special ability in this «TAL NEED the speed of aircraft in- Ses, so too, must the preci- If traffic control cannot keep pace with increasing speeds then much of the advantage of high speed flight is lost, and of course, safety margins are reduced. With increasing speeds the human operator's task be- comes extremely difficult; not only has he an enormous amount of information to deal with, but the rate at which it changes is high. Dangeroussituationscould build up within a few seconds. It is for reasons such as these that automatic aids are essential. The new simulator will enable Eurocontrol to investigate all methods of assisting the con- troller, and evaluate the safest and most effective Drocedures COVERING WESTERN EUROPE An area some two thousand kilometers in diameter will be simulated, using ' data ' from six primary and six secondary radars. The simulator will take into account aircraft performance, flight plans, weather conditions, the layout and performance of navigational aids, and the manoeuvres of the aircraft. Up to 600 aircraft can be simulated, 300 under full control and 300 flying pre-programmed routine tracks. As far as the operators are concerned displaysimulation will be perfect; data will be pre- sented on standard ATC displays frnm thfi DPCM SAHPC R It i = transistor display system is scl adaptable that much of the needs' of this complex system will be provided by proven units that are already in quantity production.
