Barkhorn, of the Federal German Air Force, was born inKonigsberg, Prussia, in March 1919. He joined the German Air Force in 1937 after completing his education. During World War 2 he flewMelO9s, FW190s and the Me262 jet. He fought on several fronts, including the Russian, and was credited with a total of 301 aircraftdestroyed. At the end of the war he became workshop manager for a Volkswagen main distributor before joining the Air Force in 1956.He was posted to the United Kingdom for refresher training and flew Provosts, Vampires and Hunters. Returning to West Germany, hefirst commanded an F-84 wing and, later, an F-104G wing. He joined the tripartite project in May 1963. Col Barkhorn now lives at Westcott,near Dorking, Surrey. He is married with three daughters. Maj John K. Campbell, of the US Air Force, was born at Chattanooga,Tenn, in 1921. He gained a Master's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, and later was appointed onthe staff of the University teaching thermodynamics. During World War 2 he flew the Martin B-26, and in Korea flew with the 315thAir Division. Maj Campbell has been a test pilot since 1956 and spent six years at Edwards AFB. He has been a Command Pilot since 1960.He is married, has three daughters and lives at Rickmansworth, Herts. Wg Cdr D. M. Scrimgeour was born in Sheffield in!927. He was educ-ated at Eastbourne College and St Andrews before joining the Royal Air Force at the age of 18. He did his flying training at Cranweli andwas commissioned in September 1947. The following year he joined 249 Sqn and then was on the staff of the Central Gunnery School atLeconfield from 1951 to 1954. He served with 500 (County of Kent) Sqn, RAuxAF, until he went on an exchange posting to the UnitedStates from 1956 until 1958 flying F-100 fighters. He commanded 43 Sqn, RAF (the "Fighting Cocks") equipped with Hunters from 1959until 1961, before spending a short time at Fighter Command HQ from where he took the RAF Staff College course at Bracknell. Wg CdrScrimgeour is married and has three daughters; his home is in Woking- ham, Berks. fin, anhedral tailplane, cleaner wing-tip pods, a more hump-backed fuselage and the provision of at least three external-store locations. The P.I 127 now has over three years of practical development behind it, including over 1,700 take-offs and landings by a dozen different pilots. It has flown supersonically in conventional flight, sideways at 60kt and backwards at 25kt. The majority of the development work has been carried out by two renowned test pilots, Mr A. W. ("Bill") Bedford and Mr Hugh Merewether, of HSA's Hawker Blackburn Division. Latest pilot to carry out the conversion course on the aircraft is Maj J. K. Campbell, of the US Air Force, who is one of the five American representatives appointed to get the tripartite squadron off the ground" (vertically, of course). A US Navy pilot now in England, Lt Cdr J. J. Tyson Jr, will join the flying programme later, wg Cdr Scrimgeour will have two Deputy Commanders: Col. G. F. Barkhorn of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Lt Col Lowell aolt of the US Army. The biographical notes which follow indicate tne calibre of men charged with finding out how jet VTOL can best °e employed. Lt Col Lowell Solt of the US Army, and US Deputy CO of the inter-national squadron, was born at Columbus, Ohio, in 1919. He graduated as a BSc from Ohio State University in 1943 and at once joined theArmy. Lt Col Solt has completed two tours of service in Germany. From 1945 to 1946 he served there as an artillery observer-pilot, andfrom 1951 to 1956 was a member of the Aviation Detachment at the US Army's European HQ. After a one-year course at the Army Com-mand and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, he graduated in 1959 and went to Korea on ground duty with the artillery.For two years from 1960 he was a member of the Army Aviation Test Board, and during his 20 years with the Army he has flown more than6,000hr. Married, with one son, Lt Col Solt lives at Lower Kingswood. Reigate, Sussex. Lt Cdr J. J. Tyson Jr is a US Navy test pilot. On leaving school in1946, he joined the Navy and attended Alabama University as a naval student. Later, as a lieutenant, he gained a degree in engineering atStanford University, Calif. He started his flying career in 1948, on fighters, and for three years from 1953 Was a flying instructor. Afterattending the Navy Test Pilot School in 1960, he served until 1963 at the Naval Air Test Center, at Patuxent River, Maryland. Lt CdrTyson, who is married with a boy and a girl, lives in London.
