711 fUCHT International, 30 April 1964 SPACE PROJECTS Europe's rocket technology is at present focused on the three-stage ELDO vehicle, now officially named Europa 1. At Hanover a half-scale model (1) of the complete vehicle is shown by ELDO; and a full-scale test model of the West German third stage (2) by the Bolkow/ERNO consortium ASAT (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Satellitentragersystem). This is to be tested in a DVL space environment chamber at Lampoldshausen, near Stuttgart. It now appears likely that the flight development programme for Europa 1 will be extended to accommodate firings of the combined second and third stages from Colomb Bechar early in 1966 prior to the first firing of the complete vehicle at Woomera. Probable date of the first flight of the complete vehicle is now late in 1966. Traditionally prolific in ambitious plans for future projects, Bolkow is exhibiting designs for high-energy upper stages and for a variety of Earth satellites. For the West German national space programme, the company proposes the Thor-Ophos (3), a two-stage vehicle which would consist of a US Thor booster to which would be fitted the proposed Ophos IE hydrogen/fluorine stage. The powerful US space industry is relatively modest at Hanover. Exhibits on the North American stand include a model of the two-man Gemini spacecraft (4) and an H-l Saturn engine. The transparent Gemini model shows the clusters of Rocketdyne pressure-fed propulsion units for re-entry control and orbital attitude manoeuvring. HANOVER 1964
