770 FLIGHT International, 7 May 1964 This British Aircraft Corporation drawing depicts the general arrangement of the Vickers-Armstrongs Type 1151 Super VCIO. The first of 22 of this model for BOAC is about to fly. At present this is the VCIO variant ordered in the greatest numbers, but the list of versions below (all of which have been, or are being, built) includes six other models AS YOU LIKE IT Customer Variants of the VCIO and Super VCIO IN DEVELOPING a new transport aircraft a manufacturer usually attempts to offer just one basic design; and, if customer require- ments make this impracticable,' variations are ideally incorporated without affecting the basic airframe. With the DC-8 and DC-9 Douglas have never departed from a single size and shape, but with the 707/720 family Boeing have played tunes on span, wing area, body length, engines and many other factors. British Aircraft Corporation have elected to follow Boeing's policy with the VCIO. On this page are listed major characteristics of the seven VCIO variants now flying or under contract, and numerous other versions are the subject of company projects and proposals. It is especially worth noting that the RAF aircraft are basically of the Super VCIO type, although their short bodies belie the fact.
