//£>../ w//A rig-W sidewalls at speed on Southampton Water RESEARCH VEHICLE HD.l with Phase II sidewalls at speed on Southampton Water Following trials with rigid sidewalls, a set of jetless immersed flexible sidewalls has recently been installed on Hovercraft Development Ltd's research vehicle HD.l, enabling the craft to perform amphibious operations. HDL report: "Although some penalty in resistance has been experienced at low speed, this configuration shows an advantage over the rigid sidewall version at high speed. Speeds of up to 30 knots have been attained. The test programme on HD.1 has been planned with the object of continuing the research into more highly developed flexible components."
