!2 FLIGHT International, 4 June 1964 FROM PRESS GANGTO PARTNERSHIP In 1914 Robert Blackburn built his first Biplane, the Type 'L' Seaplane, for the 'Daily Mail' Circuit-of-Britain Seaplane Race. The outbreak of war prevented the race from taking place—and the Blackburn Seaplane was commandeered by the Admiralty and pressed into service as a reconnaissance aircraft. Now the Fleet Air Arm has reached its fiftieth anniversary. Hawker Siddeley offer their congratulations with pride in a close association that has developed over the years. The latest product of this partnership is the Buccaneer. In service with the Royal Navy, the Buccaneer has been tailored to meet the need for a supersonic, low- level strike/reconnaissance aircraft capable of operating from aircraft carriers. The Hawker Siddeley Sea Vixen is well established as the Navy's front line fighter. Hawker Siddeley and the Fleet Air Arm are partners in a new age ofNaval aircraft.
