FLIGHT Internotionol, 18 June 1964 23 I1I.IOTT HAVE A SYSTEM... ... to meet all the neeas of the aircraft designer and operator for flight instruments and flight control. Elliott's team of twelve divisions have a unique capa- bility and strength which springs from gathering in one company all the techniques needed for control of flight in all its aspects. A leader in inertial navigation since the early 1 95O's Elliott's were the first European company to design develop and put into quantity production an ad- vanced inertial navigation system. This system for Blue Steel weapons and carrier aircraft of the British V bomber force has been outstandingly successful. The experience gained has'led to marked reductions in system size, cost and weight in Elliott's new E.3 and E.4 platforms. These platforms, available in 3 or 4 axis versions have a unique azimuth system which gives a number of important advantages which are not possible with conventional spherical bearing gim- balled platforms. Among these advantages are:— I/MAXIMUM COST EFFECTIVENESS Any gyroscope of a range of miniature frame sizes may be fitted. According to the particular requirement Gyroscopes ^ith random drift rates in the range 0.257hr. to 0-01 °/hr under flight conditions, can be provided. Thus the performance and cost of the platform can be tailored exactly to the specific application. This Particular feature allows the platform to be used at competitive costs as an attitude and heading reference for high performance aircraft. 2/SMALL SIZE AND WEIGHT The E.3 platform has a diameter of 8.5 ins. and a length of 13 ins. It weighs only 24 Ib. The E.4 platform weighs only 2 Ib. more. 3/LOW INITIAL COST The E series platform configuration permits appreciable reductionsin complexity of design and manufacture with consequent reductions in cost. 4/HIGH RELIABILITY Reduction in complexity quality control and selection of components and the use of modern electronic techniques such as thin film circuits ensure very high reliability in service. 5/EASE OF SERVICING All gyroscopes, accelerometers, major components and platform electronics are available for adjustment or removal without dis- mantling the platform or disturbing bearing pre loads. 6 HIGH ACCURACY Random Gyro Drift Rate as low as 0.01 °/hr. Accelerometer Short Term Zero Stability 3 x 10-5g Azimuth Read Out: 1 minute arc. 7 CHOICE OF AXESLSYSTEMS Different co-ordinate systems required for particular installations may be provided by optional independent orientation of the accelerometer assembly. These features of the E.3 and E.4 platform enable them to be used in a very wide range of applications for aircraft, ships, space and land vehicles. Their low cost enable them to be used competitively as an attitude or heading reference or in a doppler inertial system when full inertial capability is not required. Flight trials have shown the inherent suitability of' this platform for the requirements of current and future aircraft.
