INDUSTRY International... a squeegee, and was quickly cut into four for mounting in 35mm slide mounts. The time from exposure to four finished mounted line-transparencies was 2min 30sec. In all, twenty slides were produced for screening to the airline group, the last drawings not leaving the drawing office for the photo department until only fifteen minutes before the start. Galleys for AA One-Elevens C. F. Taylor (Metal Workers) Ltd, of Wokingham, countered very strong American competi- tion last month in winning the contract to supply buffet units for the BAC One- Elevens being built for American Airlines. Award to Smiths' Executive For his lecture Automatic Landing in the Hawker Siddeley Trident, which he read in Stock- holm last March and for his contribution to his subject, Mr W. H. McKinlay, BSC, AMIEE, AFRAes, FIN, special assistant to the technical director of Smiths Aviation Division, has been awarded the Thulin Medal in Bronze by the Swedish Society of Aeronautics. BAC Appointments Recent appointments within BAC include the promotion of Mr John Prothero Thomas, AFRAes, airline development engineer for the BAC One- Eleven, to the post of deputy sales manager (civil); Mr C. Hamshaw Thomas, MA, AFRAes, recently responsible for performance evaluation work, becomes chief sales engin- eer, BAC One-Eleven; and Mr R. H. Sawyer, formerly the Corporation's chief accountant, becomes financial director of the Preston division. Scottish Aviation Sales Appointment Fol- lowing the departure of Mr I. C. Grant to take up the post of general manager, engin- eering, with British Eagle at Heathrow, Mr H. G. Hart, ARAes, has been appointed sales manager of Scottish Aviation's aircraft division. Mr Hart, a former RAF Halton apprentice, joined Scottish Aviation in 1952 and the sales department in 1958. 78 Mr Charles S. (Chuck) Wagner, vice-president of the Lockheed-Georgia Co, was the first recipient, on July 2, of the new Glenn H. Curtiss Award, presented to the individual contributing most to the US aerospace industry. Mr Wagner's contribution was to direct the programme that produced the C-I4I heavy freighter, which stands behind him. Even in the country where newsboys can, traditionally, become President, Mr Wagner's career has been remarkable. He joined Lockheed Aircraft at Burbank in 1936 as a toolmaktr and has been v-p at Marietta since July 1961 USA Tyre Telemetry Telemetry techniques are being employed by Goodyear technicians at Akron, Ohio, to probe the inner workings of high-speed aircraft tyres on dynamometer test rigs. A small, battery-operated five- channel transmitter is bolted to the wheel unit and broadcasts, to a standard FM radio in the 90Mc/s range, such information as tread and sidewall temperatures and inflation pressures. Recorders take this information and produce charts and graphs for later reference. Previously, the only way such data could be obtained was to use a pressure gauge and a thermocouple after the test was over and the tyre was at rest. The transmitter was specially developed by Goodyear to stand the tremendous centrifugal and acceleration-deceleration levels encountered. Inflation pressure data is obtained from a small transducer attached to the inflation valve. Temper- atures are obtained from four thermistors, no bigger than a pin head, which are embedded in the tyre and take readings from the bead, shoulder, tread centreline and contained air. For the first time Goodyear technicians are able to plot temperature and pressure curves throughout the dynamic test cycle and relate these factors to other variables, such as time and distance. RIGHT International, 9 July 1964 Oil Gauging, Atomic Style A 4ilb oil gauging system, employing atomic radiation and developed by Atomics International, a division of NAA, has completed its first series of flight tests at Edwards AFB, showing inflight variations of only 3 per cent. In ground tests it was 99.5 per cent accurate. The gauge employs tiny sources of gamma radiation, and a detector, attached externally to opposite sides of the oil tank. The amount of radiation reaching the detector is affected by the quality of oil in the tank. The detector reading is presented on a dial contents gauge. The system is being adapted for fuel gauging also. Canada Back to Canada Mr H. Robert Warren, who was responsible for early development of the de Havilland Canada long-sounding aerials (STEMS) used in many US satellite applications, has returned to DHC from a 2£-year attachment to Hawker Siddeley Dynamics in England, where he was involved in project work on future space programmes. He is now deputy programme manager on the ISIS satellite programme at Downsview. Germany Hughes in German Venture Hughes Air- craft Co, of Culver City, Calif, and Eltro GmbH, of Heidelberg, have formed a joint company in Germany, Eltrughes Strah- lungstechnik GmbH, in which they hold equal shares. The joint company's manu- facturing and research facilities will be Heidelberg and its principal activities will be in the laser, infra-red and optical fields. The GE CT-S8 turbojet engine, being built under licence in Japan by Ishikawajima- Harima Heavy Industries for various helicopter operations, has recently been "marinized" by the licensees for use in hydrofoil craft and overwater air-cushion vehicles. Here a marine CT-58 is seen on the bench
