FLIGHT International, 6 August 1964 One air force known to have shown interest in the availability of secondhand Hunters in recent months is that of Portu- gal, which is at present equipped with two squadrons of F-86F interceptors and two squadrons of now very old F-84G Thunder- jet fighter-bombers. It is no doubt the latter which any Hunters purchased would replace. It would seem that no US replace- ment for the now outworn F-84Gs, origi- nally supplied as US military aid, has been forthcoming because of Portugal's lengthy war in Angola. In this context, new US military aid to Portugal would provoke a storm of diplomatic protest. Boeing V-P Moves to Douglas The president of the Douglas Aircraft Co, Mr Donald W. Douglas, Jnr, recently announced the appointment, as executive vice-president operations, of Mr Wellwood E. Beall, previously senior vice-president of the Boeing Co, Douglas's main competitor in the heavy jet transport and other fields. Mr Beall moves to Santa Monica after 35 years with the Boeing Co, during which he has held a number of executive appoint- ments. Also elected a director of Douglas, Mr Beall becomes a member of a five-man management committee headed by Mr Douglas. The other members are the simultaneously promoted Mr A. V. Leslie, now executive vice-president finance; Mr Charles R. Able, group vice-president missile and space systems; and Mr Jackson R. McGowen, group vice-president aircraft systems. Announcing Mr Beall's move, Mr Doug- las said that the changes ensured maximum effectiveness of the strong management team and culminated a programme pursued since the company reorganized three years ago. "I am very glad to welcome Wellwood Beall to our team. We have known him as a capable competitor and are pleased that his talents will now be joined with ours," Mr Douglas said. 201 Load Up! He is Mr C. B. White, for the past year executive director (commercial) of HSA, and he took up his new post at Hatfield on August 1. Previously he was contracts manager (civil) of HSA. Mr White is no newcomer to the de Havilland division, having joined the de Havilland Aircraft Co Ltd in January 1953 on the legal side, becoming secretary of de Havilland Holdings Ltd in 1959 and retaining that post until 1960. He served as a pilot in the RAF Coastal Command from 1941-1945 and was in the RAFVR until it was disbanded in 1953.
