340 FLIGHT International, 27 August I9U INDUSTRY International Products Company News Great Britain Auto Diesels Court Chinese Sales Auto Diesels Ltd, the Uxbridge, Middx, manu- facturers of aircraft starting and servicing units, are to attempt a new export market— already over 70 per cent of their products are sent abroad—in Communist China. At the British Industries Exhibition being mounted in Peking in November the company will exhibit a GPU, in con- junction with Leyland Motors. Improved since it was introduced two years ago, when its first user was Polish Airlines, LOT, the Auto Diesels GPU 10 incorporates a 6-cyl 210 h.p. AEC diesel engine driving a dual-wound, common- carcase generator. It is suited particularly to the Ilyushin 11-28 four-engined turbo- prop airliner used by CAAC and other Communist airlines, for the generator has two 28V outputs which are fed separately to each of the two starter motors on each Ivchenko engine. Following the initial starting operation, the two supplies are switched in series by the contactors on the aircraft to provide a single 56V supply to each starter motor, thus increasing the acceleration of the engine for quicker starting. In addition, a single 28V supply can be taken out of the GPU on one cable to provide supplies for all 28V d.c. aircraft. Wallace and Tiernan, of Tonbridge, Kent, have developed this test trolley which can give pressure-operated aircraft instruments accu- racy checks to laboratory standards on the airport apron or in the hangar. The trolley is designed to measure static pressures of — 100ft to + /00,000ft altitudes in a series of steps and airspeeds from l20kt to 700kt on a continuous scale, but it is available in other speed and altitude ranges P. G. Lucas in HSA Move Mr P. C Lucas, a famous Hawker test pilot in the 1930s and wartime years, who headed the flight test team on Hurricane, Typhoon and Tempest work, has been appointed an executive director of Hawker Siddeley Aviation Ltd, with special international responsibilities. He will work closely with the chief executives of HSA's operating divisions and with Hawker Siddeley International in exploring possibilities of international collaboration on new military and civil aircraft and co-ordinate the preliminary arrangements for any joint R and D or production programmes which may result. Mr Lucas, who became a director of Hawker Aircraft Ltd in 1945, moves into the new post from his previous position as an executive director of Hawker Siddeley International. In another HSA appointment Mr J. H. A. Wood, at present commercial manager of the de Havilland Division, is promoted to commercial manager of the parent company, assisting the divisions on contractual matters relating to civil aircraft sales and co-ordinating activities in this field. Maclaren Valve Range Being Extended Following the completion of new facilities at their Glasgow factory, Robert Maclaren and Co are to extend the range of fluid control valves manufactured there. Since last October the company has been market- ing in Britain and manufacturing some of the products of their US associate, General Controls Inc, whose fuel valves are in such aircraft as the Phantom 2, F-104, 707 and the DC8 and in guided missiles. Bufova Accutron watches, which incorporate a tiny electronic unit vibrating a tuning fork 360 times a second and which are claimed to have an accuracy of 99.9977 per cent—i.e. within two seconds a jay—have been adopted by Alitalia, the Italian airline, for all its crews. Here Capt Wilfredo d'Angelo, a Caravelle skipper, checks his before taking off from London (Heathrow) for Rome Captain C. F. Demonstrated in competition with other catapults at the Naval Air Test Facility a: Lakehurst, NJ, the CE 1-3 embodies a continuous loop of wire rope driven by a large friction pulley, which accelerates the aircraft, attached to a wheeled shuttle, to take-off velocity within 2,000ft. This is the limit length of the US Marine Corps' "short airfield for tactical support."
