FLIGHT International, 3 September 1964 400-401 The Short Turbo-Skyvan (left) is now in production as a versatile light transport able to carry 4,0001b of bulky freight, or up to 18 passengers, out of the smallest airfields. The standard powerplant is the Turbomeca Astazou X turboprop, rated at 666 e.h.p. Short Brothers & Harland Ltd have put the Skyvan into production at their own risk, demonstrating their faith in the sales potential of this unique aircraft First flown in 1957, the Short SCI V/STOL research aircraft is powered by five Rolls-Royce RB.I08 turbojets, four of which are arranged to pivot approximately vertically in the centre of the fuselage in order to lift the aircraft without assistance from the deJta-shaf>ed wing. Equipment includes a three-axis autostabilization system, and it is intended that a future research programme will lead ultimately to VTOL operation under blind conditions The Short Seacat has now been adopted by seven of the world's navies as a close-range defence system against attacking aircraft. One of its greatest advantages is that it can readily be installed aboard small vessels, and one type of launcher can even be fitted to fast torpedo and gun boats. Below is seen a firing from the Australian destroyer HMAS "Derwent''
