Head Office: Guadalajara, Mexico. Transportes Aereos Nacionales SA—TANAirlines—was founded by Honduras private interests in 1947 for the operation of contractcargo flights. The company built up sub- stantial cargo traffic and in 1950 scheduledpassenger and freight operations were begun. There is now a small US private holding in thecompany. TAN's routes now serve Miami, El Salvador, Guatemala and British Honduras,in addition to Honduras. Head Office: Ediflcio Salame, Tegucigalpa,Honduras. Executives: M. Brooks, president; R. Trans World Airlines—TWA—had its originin Western Air Express, which was founded in 1925 to bid for an air-mail route from LosAngeles to Salt Lake City. WAE began mail service in 1926. In 1929 Trans-ContinentalAir Transport, which had started a combjned rail/air transcontinental service, obtainedcontrol of Maddux Air Lines. At about the same time WAE absorbed Standard Air Linesand then, on October 1, 1930, TAT-Maddux and Western Air Express completed a mergerto form Trans-continental and Western Air Inc (TWA). In 1934, reconstitution followedthe Post Office mail-flying upheaval. TWA became Trans World Airlines in 1950.The airline has been responsible for sponsoring some successful aircraft, having issued speci-fications for the Douglas DC-l/DC-2, the Boeing 307 Stratoliner and the Constellation.TWA now has more than 50,000 miles of routes stretching from coast to coast in theUSA and across the North Atlantic to Europe, North Africa and Asia as far asBombay. Non-stop Boeing 707 jet services between New York and California and 707Intercontinental services between New York, London and European points were started in1959. Trek's flights from Johannesburg arenow routed through Windhoek, Luanda and Cape Verde to Luxembourg. Two L.I649Ashave been acquired from World Airways. Turk Hava Yollari AS — THY — formerlyknown as Devlet Hava Yollari (Turkish State Airlines), was set up by the Government in1933 as part of the Ministry of Defence. Control passed to the Ministry of Communi-cations in 1938 until 1956 when it became a corporation bearing its present title Turk HavaYollari Anonim Sirketi (Turkish Airlines Inc). BO AC now holds a 6 % interest in THY, whichoperates an internal network and international services to Athens, Rome, Frankfurt, Nicosiaand Beirut.
